    Mercury 150 Outboard Charging Question

You might check for a drain when the motor is off. Put an ammeter in series between the battery positive post and the battery positive cable. With ign key off and all accessories off, see if she draws some amperage. Some Merc 150HP OBs have dual VRs. One could be shorted to ground? A guess.

JUST CHANGED THE STARTER AND SOLENOID.

Outboards tend to use the starter solenoid to connect multiple cables, as a convenience. You should have only one cable on each of the smaller solenoid terminals, (usually yellow/red and black) and only one cable on the starter cable terminal. The rest should be on the battery cable terminal.

    Engine dies won't restart

MerCruiser sterndrives have ign kill switches on the shifting mechanisms. They can get stuck leaving a no spark condition. Not sure if inboards have those.

Where is fuel sending unit for 2003 Crownline 226?

Fuel level gauges are usually located on the middle to rear part of the tank. They have a better chance of being accurate in that location.

    Mercury I6 Powerhead ID

The Maxrules web site has a model year guide for Mercs. That should ID your powerhead. As for the gearcase....a '78 gearcase will have the straight down trailing edge on the skeg. The newer gearcase will likely have the swept back skeg.

    Tilt remote switch

Has it ever worked, or is it new to you? You might look under the engine cowling and see if the remote trim switch is connected. Look for blue/white and green/white wires. Trace the wires from the engine switch and see if they meet.

    Cause of this milky water

Upper driveshaft seal is pretty easy to replace, since you just need to pull the flywheel to get at it. Do it whenever convenient. Also, if they leak, water does not get into the motor, just some extra air. It is real smart to replace the lower crankshaft seals, while you have the powerhead off.

Any way to change just one piston and rings on 1988 Mercury 115 L6 2 stroke?

You can pull all pistons out of the block, still connected to the crankshaft. Merc uses six special ring compressors to install the crank/piston assembly. Can you do it without those special tools, I have no idea. I know that you cannot install the crank/piston assembly YOURSELF without...

    Engine dies won't restart

If it won't fire using starting fluid in the carb, you have zero spark.

    Cause of this milky water

It looks like fuel and water mixed. Your exhaust extension does have cooling water, exhaust and exhaust+ water in those three cavities, respectively. They could easily migrate to the driveshaft. If also could be leaking from the lower cylinder, past the seals you will be replacing. When...

Any way to change just one piston and rings on 1988 Mercury 115 L6 2 stroke?

Replacement pistons are the two ring style. The rings are keystone shaped, so no swapping is possible. I am not sure if you can buy the older style (3 ring) replacements. You need to check as the price difference is a lot, if you have to buy all new pistons. You can remove the crank to...

    1989 Seville 19 questions

Ok, you have a IL4. You want a V8 I am an amateur, but I think you would need a two motor mounts on the sides, near the front. The dog house likely needs to get wider and possibly deeper, changing any jump seats. Usually the stringers can be a platform for the motor mounts. Hopefully your's...

    Tachometer troubles

You need to look on the tach maker's application chart. Most modern tachs will not work with your dual magneto system.

Must I pull power head for exhaust cover removal?

Water in the bottom cylinder is often the failure of crankshaft seals. You have to pull the powerhead to replace those. The lower cowling does not come off until the powerhead is removed.

    Outboard Flex Tube

Check electrical supply places. I bought the small stuff at Home Despot. I have two sets of cable, wires and hoses to the motor, so the smaller stuff just worked.

    Disintegrating rivets

Scott, Are you sure about that? My Merc has a block ground and 4 1/2" mounting bolts. There is no way the engine is not grounded to the boat and water. my boat is fiberglass, however, a lot of motors have parts in the water, even with the motor tilted up.

    Charging system help

I did not think IL6 motors were made in 1990, but that is not germane, Those motors had a voltage regulator, driven by the stator. The stator supplied an AC current which was rectified and then regulated, based upon the condition of the battery. Simple test is to disconnect the yellow stator...

1998 Evinrude Outboard 150 Ocean Pro Ignition Switch issue

Does the starter spin continuously, when the engine is running? I would expect it would. Look for melted wiring, on the engine harness. Wires can melt and connect to each other on that motor. I am expecting the purple wire is somehow connected to the yellow/red wire.
