    SWITCH FROM QJET4MV TO EDELBROCK

I went thru the same thing thinking that the QJet was just too old to rebuild. I tried replacing it with the exact same Holley 4160 that was used after GM quit building Qjets but I had no end of trouble with that carb even though it was brand new. I pulled out the Qjet, carefully rebuilt it and...

    Volvo Penta 5.7 gxi overheating

Then go back to the last thing that was changed, the impeller.

    Volvo Penta 5.7 gxi overheating

I do agree based on what you say either the impeller isn’t pumping, or water is not getting to it, or the thermostat is stuck closed. If it overheats that fast there must be no water circulation at idle. Have you verified that the engine is actually overheating? You can use an IR temp gun to...

    Volvo Penta 5.7 gxi overheating

OK you have 2 bellows, the upper is the driveshaft bellows, there should never be water in that one, if there is it is cracked or torn and must be replaced, and you likely will have to replace the gimble bearing and maybe the u joints due to corrosion The lower one, is the exhaust bellows, that...

    Volvo Penta 5.7 gxi overheating

Before putting it back on, you should check aligment with an alignment tool, and using the jack helps get it at exactly the right height. Engine alignment is a whole topic unto itself, once set right it usually doesn't change unless you have a boat with rot in the transom or engine mount pads...

    Volvo Penta 5.7 gxi overheating

Yes it is DYI but the drive is heavy and if you're older it can be tough on your back to get it back on. I use a drive jack to make it easy. The upper bellows has the driveshaft and u joints inside, the lower nothing, its just to quiet the exhaust, to change the bellows the drive has to be off...

    Volvo Penta 5.7 gxi overheating

What year and what specific drive do you have? Is it an SX or SX-A? I would try to find a document titled “Volvo Penta Overheat Diagnosis”, it is a PDF that is right from V/P and gives all the trouble shooting steps needed to narrow down the problem. Have you checked the thermostat (removed it...

2008 4.3 ltr. TKS diesels when turning off

I think Merc had a service bulletin on this problem, see if you can find it. I have the 4bbl Quadrajet on my 4.3 (pre-vortec) and never had dieseling even with the old cyl heads that I replaced 4 years ago. I wonder if gas is dribbling out of the main boosters or idle transfer slots as you shut...

Mercruiser 5.0 dies while idling - no fuel from line

It could also be a clogged screen in the fuel pick up tube; if you replace the anti siphon and still have the same problem,

    Chrysler 318 cooling issues

If you are in an area where there is marine growth that can cause a blockage in your raw water intakes. Very common here with boats moored in salt water. I usually tilt my outdrive all the way up every couple of weeks to check the water intake holes. Even if the impeller is slightly above the...

    Trying to get some information

The Volvo SX was based on the OMC Cobra. It’s nearly the same transom mount but the drive was converted from dog clutch shifting in the lower unit to cone clutch shifting in the upper unit.

That’s correct if it looks like a Cobra it may be a Volvo SX.

PS cold compression tests are not as accurate as hot. Engine should be warmed up all plugs out and throttle & choke valve wide open.

MASSIVE oil leak mechanic can’t find

Ok one thing easy to miss is a rubber plug that’s used in a marine application when the dipstick goes to the bottom of the pan and not into the block. A little rubber plug just above the oil pan in front of the starter.

    Outdrive gasket pushing out

Thanks for posting that article up I’m going to print it out! On my Cobra I just coat the gasket and the sealing surfaces on the drive & transom mount with Evinrude gasket sealer and also coat the 6 studs with the same. No leaks nor difficulty getting the nuts & drive off even after 6 months in...

Tired of carpet! Looking for something else?

I had mine redone with non skid gel coat about 15 years ago and it still looks pretty good now. If your boat has wood cored decks as most boats older than 15 years do you don’t want anything to trap moisture .
