    1990 omc cobra 4.3 won’t rev above 2500

Good point Is the throttle valve in the carb opening following the throttle lever opening? I had a similar but not identical problem years ago and it was the anti siphon valve on the gas tank. Mine would rev in neutral but would not plane out the boat.

    1990 omc cobra 4.3 won’t rev above 2500

So pump is ok but you still have a lot to check. If you have a boat with the points distributor you really should have a dwell meter. I set mine at the lower end of the dwell range because dwell & gap are inversely related. So lower dwell equates with larger gap and the points will stay in...

    1990 omc cobra 4.3 won’t rev above 2500

Check fuel delivery system Pump, tank vent & anti siphon valve and of course carb Ignition system Dwell, total timing advance at 3200 rpm (18* for the pre vortec 4.3 V6) Base timing should be 6* BTDC Spark plugs (AC 43MR marine plugs) Gap .035”

need help figuring out how to remove a starter from a 1996 4.3GL

You might need to remove the exhaust on that side to get at it. Make sure there is no water in the cyls that kills starters and ruins engines.

Volvo Penta 5.0 GL-H loss of rpm

Holley 2bbl. Was the power valve replaced & is it the correct rating for vacuum readings on your engine? Power valve on these functions as an enrichment device. What do the center insulator porcelain look like on your spark plugs? Blistered white (too lean) or black/brown (too rich) should be...

    Volvo Penta - E10 Petrol/Gas/Fuel safe?

I've been running it herer for approx 15 years (we have no choice, its forced on us by our "helpful" goverment officials) and the one thing you may find is that if there is varnish build up in your tank it may clean it out and clog filters. So, keep a few extra water separating fuel filters on...

    Mercruiser starter

not much information here to advise you....what engine, does the mount area use the straight across or staggered pattern, the other variable is the flywheel diameter. Most are now using the much lighter and faster cranking PMGR starters. I have an ARCO in mine and love it vs the old heavy...

New, steering cylinder locks to starboard

Now this probably doesn't apply but in my OMC Cobra shop manual they list a procedure for balancing the actuator valve if it has been changed in the power steering assembly. However, the unit used in the earlier Cobras (86-89) is the same as the old style Merc Alpha actuator and the unit used in...

Volvo Penta 5.0 GL-H loss of rpm

Changing prop to a 15x15 should have put you at or over 5,000 rpm based on your previous results. I’m wondering how you’re measuring speed & rpm. Boat speedometers (if not GPS) and tachs are not all that accurate. After all you’ve done I’d want to verify those #s with a digital tach hooked up to...

Marada boats and 5.8L vp fl

and any of the outdrive parts will cost more because its a VP! however, the bigger issue is the structural work done to the boat to restore it. I'd be looking very carefully at that, before anything else. one day after this boat is sold, I think I'll have my own ebay store, lightly used OMC...

Marada boats and 5.8L vp fl

Well here's what I think: total up the parts you might have to replace in your ownership time, example: exhaust manifolds exhaust elbows front circulation pump fuel pump carb rebuild kit distributor cap, rotor and module if electronic can you source these parts? If so then I don't think its a...

    Mercruiser 8.2 w/Cats & Closed Cooling Question

Well my thought is to try to go as new as possible, even if a little smaller because of the high cost of outboards. I think they get a good 10-15 years in salt water after that they are on borrowed time. The sad thing about sterndrives is if you can deal with the maintenance and have closed...

    Mercruiser 8.2 w/Cats & Closed Cooling Question

I agree Ted, the cat converter issue has really pushed the market to outboards and I could see that when we were at the Marina picking up my brothers boat. Yes there are stern drives still being bought but experienced boaters here in the salt know better after having one or 2. To add a $5000...

    Anti Seize or Not?

I’ve been using this for years, it’s rated for up to 400*F so for marine exhaust it’s fine.

    7.4 Mercruiser Engine Life Expectancy

Need more info, is it closed cooled or raw water cooled, salt use or fresh, has the exhaust been maintained, etc. If closed cooled and the exhaust has been maintained you've got a lot more life in that engine assuming compression is good and no head gasket leaks. Even if raw water cooled in...

    Mercruiser 8.2 w/Cats & Closed Cooling Question

That’s what it is. Plain crazy. Had a friend with a Merc 4.3 and cats and replacement was $4500 parts. They sold the boat! Ted I think I’d keep the boat you have! This is why I will never own an I/O with cats. Just another maintenance headache. Only outboards from now on.

Smoke from valve cover / breather hose SBC 305

Mine does this as well at idle after warming up but it doesn’t get worse when running at higher rpm. The engine does consume some oil but it doesn’t foul plugs at all so I just live with it for the time being. The short block on mine is original 33 years old, reman heads installed 4 years ago. If...

Smoke from valve cover / breather hose SBC 305

There will always be some blow by as seen by the need for crankcase ventilation and on motor vehicles the adoption of positive crankcase ventilation valves. The question is how much is too much. I think if you get some smoke there but the engine doesn’t consume excessive oil I would not...
