    There will be a switch /knob on the back of the tach to adjust it for 4,6,8 cylinder engines. Sometimes cycling it between the cylinders and back to 6 can help

    SEI has a 3 year no fault warranty not sure if they honor it to the new boat owner, but may be the drive has warranty left ? If water got in the bellows it can cause corrosion on the drive input shaft which will ruin the seal in no time .

    Yes if he had to replace the gimbal ring this would be a fix to cover the acess hole to get the steering pin on. You just want to make sure it is secure with a few screws/rivets and sealed with 5200.

    Maybe tje passages are a little plugged? I would go back to lean stumble spot and go out 3/4 or one complete turn, 1.25 turns at most not 3-4 turns. Let it idle 15 minutes and pull a spark plug or 2 and read them . 3-4 turns out you will eventually foul the plugs with black soot. If it idles ok...

    Yes timing light will advance the light 10 degrees so it lines up with the tdc mark. I think you have the thunderbolt V so you need it to be in base mode to set.
