    Edelbrock 1409 hard start, flooding

Something about the floats contacting the side of the fuel bowl. Might have to check clearances carefully. All carbs have their quirks. Right now I’ve learned most of the Quadrajet ones but when they are clean and properly set up they are really good. We owned a ‘75 Olds with a 350 and a QJet...

Preignition knock under a load 2000 Thunderbolt 5

What do your spark plugs look like? Light tan or grey or blistered white? If the latter that’s a clear indication of a lean condition

Outdrive does not want to re -install in boat

I think the keys to doing this job: Drive jack to get the drive at the right height Proper alignment and lining up gimble bearing with the tool as mentioned A means of turning the driveshaft just enough to make the splines line up. You’re talking like maybe 1/8–1/16” here... That’s whats...

    Edelbrock 1409 hard start, flooding

I never had an Edelbrock but I heard that the floats can hang up. On my Quadrajet both times I had that problem it was the needle valve. Easy fix once you got the air horn off. I also had flooding similar with a Holley due to a piece of rubber from those fuel transfer tube o rings holding the...

    Edelbrock 1409 hard start, flooding

Agreed in the second vid is the engine off? It’s REALLY flooding prob a piece of grit between the needle valve & the seat. A possible quick fix is to remove the carb and drain out all the gas & let it dry out to be safe. Then with the carb level blast a bit of compressed air thru the fuel inlet...

restoration of 1991 VIP and engine upgrade inc conversion from spitfire ignition

You need a decent digital volt ohmmeter and the specs for the Delco EST system, it shouldn’t be hard to find because Volvo Penta used that same system for years. I don’t know off had because my OMC still has the original points system which works fine if you know how to maintain them.

    Impeller housing overheating

Starter terminals, battery terminals and battery cables. All must be free of corrosion clean & tight. Sounds like resistance at the terminals/corroded cables. Any bad wiring or terminals in the starting system can cause this....

OMC 4.3 Idles great won’t accelerate

You want to make sure that the ESA is not on all the time. Try temporarily unplugging the ESA switches and see if it will rev properly

restoration of 1991 VIP and engine upgrade inc conversion from spitfire ignition

Well you can simply measure the primary & secondary resistance of the coil against specs. Do it after running the engine as long as it can so it is hot you want to see if it breaks down when hot. The “engineers” need to go back to “school” if they think a simple marine charging system charges...

Access to Exhaust flapper 2.3 OMC?

That's about the only way, you might need to take a coat hanger and bend it into a hook shape to grab it and pull it out. I had to do this once when I had an overheat. Here's the one that didn't fall down the Y pipe, the other one was in the bottom of the exhaust passage. I also found one stuck...

Volvo Penta 3.0 I/O Overheating. Brand New Engine!

Well here's the thing, on the OMC/Volvo style thermostat housing, the exhaust manifold(s) always gets water from the impeller whether the engine thermostat is open or not. So if both the exhaust and the engine are overheating as you have, it is likely that the impeller is not pumping water or...

OMC 4.3 Idles great won’t accelerate

Yep could be that, but also on our own Four Winns, we had a rusty anti siphon valve, that did the same thing, it would start and rev in neutral just fine but would not plane out the boat. Our mechanic replaced it back in 2004 and its been fine ever since. Spring loaded valve that shuts off fuel...

restoration of 1991 VIP and engine upgrade inc conversion from spitfire ignition

PS: on older OMCs there are a few quirks in the wiring system, one is that the sense circuit (this senses actual battery voltage so the voltage regulator can adjust accordingly) can develop high resistance which causes the alternator to over charge the battery, this is solved by disconnecting...

restoration of 1991 VIP and engine upgrade inc conversion from spitfire ignition

Electric choke, which needs constant 12v to open, if connected to the ignition coil can cause that. In fact the instructions for Holley and Edelbrock carbs tell you not to wire it that way. The electric choke should be connected to the AC tap terminal on the alternator, depending on which...

restoration of 1991 VIP and engine upgrade inc conversion from spitfire ignition

The engines were always (till Merc started making their own) GM marine based on Chevrolet car & truck engines. Have the “engineers” done diagnostics to determine why it’s not starting? Lack of spark, fuel or other cause?

    Engine upgrade

What I'd do is keep the points distributor, the electronic conversions can be more trouble than they are worth if the module fails and you have no spares, just learn how to set points, and lube the advance weights (there is a lubricating wick in the center of the distributor shaft, it just takes...

    Help with water in oil

What I’ve seen: Every year at winterization I’ve filled it with AF, either the best -100 or mixed up a batch of Sierra no tox AF. At first start up in spring first AF comes out the exhaust then clear water no rust. That’s what makes me think it made a difference. And the fact the the water...

Buying a used boat anxiety-talk me down.

No way I'd put 9 people on a 20' boat, that's going to take something like a pontoon boat to be comfortable. My 20' is bigger than modern "20'ers" but more than 5 people is too many in my opinion. As far as condition, and potential problems, if the boat has a carpeted plywood deck forget it...

    Nightmare

Great glad you had a good outcome, I was not surprised by the low compression test results because when I looked back at your vid of the engine running with the fuel pressure and vacuum gauges hooked up, your idle vacuum reading was really low, like 12-10 inches of mecury, should be close to 18...

    Help with water in oil

I changed my thermostat yesterday and drained the motor down enough to dry out & check the water passage in the intake manifold. It is surprisingly solid and this is the original intake reused when I replaced the heads 4 years ago. Now used in salt close to 20 years and never flushed during the...
