Hydrolock, swim platform, riser height and static water line question

I agree I might want to replace those elbows to be on the safe side and that also gives you the opportunity to upgrade to taller ones. Even if you need to do minor fiberglass work to achieve that goal it’s worth it. Keep the mind that water in cyls and hydrolock will destroy and engine sooner...

Hydrolock, swim platform, riser height and static water line question

If you can post up a pic of the boat in the water specifically the transom so we can see how high up the water is against the transom mount assembly. Here’s mine...the Cobra transom mount & the Volvo SX mount are nearly the same. The cat is fake and keeps birds from using it as a toilet lol!

Omc 4.3? What did i buy?

eBay, I found a couple of good pre Vortec ones there and the Vortec ones are probably easier to find

Hydrolock, swim platform, riser height and static water line question

There would be rust stains in the bottom of the exhaust gas passage of the exhaust manifold. Inside the exhaust gas passage there should just be dark grey/blackish deposits, no rust. The other questions are difficult to answer.

First time pulling a riser with questions about condition w pics

for the flame arrestor I'd use carb cleaner and dry with compressed air. plugs, it depends on if it's a pre vortec or vortec engine. Does the intake manifold have 8 (Vortec) or 12 bolts (pre Vortec) holding it down?

First time pulling a riser with questions about condition w pics

Might be as simple as a clogged dirty flame arrestor & spark plugs that need to be replaced. See how the exhaust ports on the pic of my engine are a lighter grey?

Hydrolock, swim platform, riser height and static water line question

Aftermarket. Like what you see on inboard boats with thru the transom exhaust. The OMC/VP exhaust bellows is retained with a clamp on the gimble housing end and a snap ring in the pivot housing end. So to remove it you have to pull the drive get a snap ring pliers and remove that end, then tilt...

Hydrolock, swim platform, riser height and static water line question

I looked up your engine in the V/P parts diagram on this site and it did not come with flappers. I’d consider removing the exhaust bellows and installing an exhaust flapper on the gimble housing where the exhaust bellows would normally attach. I’d start with that and if it solves the problem...

I’m not really seeing a problem there except the engine may be running a bit rich or maybe burning a bit of oil. Looks like you caught it before any damage was done. Aren’t you glad you checked?

Hydrolock, swim platform, riser height and static water line question

If your boat is a 99 then it may not have flappers, I think V/P discontinued them around that time. V/P also had trouble with their manifold to elbow gaskets and they had been revised a few times. Have you seen any rust stains at the joint between the manifold & elbow? If so then the gaskets...

    460 King Cobra oil pump

Also if you can find it, Lucas Marine oil is a lot higher in Zinc than any of the other widely available marine oils. Might want to see if you can find it. With the roller cams on the newer GM based engines its not needed but with a flat tappet I'd probably use that...

First time pulling a riser with questions about condition w pics

Whichever ones you buy take a look at the mating surfaces before installing. Some of the imported manifolds and elbows are not machined accurately enough to make a water proof seal. I used a straight edge and feeler gauges to check mine. Look at the Volvo Penta specs I posted in this thread. I...

    Winterizing 350 mag?

Remember to totally drain the bottom end of the big hose that connects the thermostat housing and the front circulation pump should be disconnected in addition to the drain plugs being removed; unless Merc changed the design. There is no need to suck AF up the drive you can simply: Reconnect the...

Omc 4.3? What did i buy?

When GM converted these to roller cams the block was changed they added 2 threaded bosses to retain the sheet metal guide that retains the lifters in the correct position. But of course millions of small block Chevys did just fine on their flat tapper cams. Just use an oil higher in zinc that...

First time pulling a riser with questions about condition w pics

Yep we couldn't see that in the original pix due to shadows but for sure they were leaking and for sure replace the whole works. Your engine will appreciate it! This job if let go, will result in at least having to do a valve job in a season or 2. Rusty valve stems, rusty valve seats, low...

    Carb issues

You may have sticking floats or a blown power valve, there are like a gazillion vids on how to rebuild Holley carbs out there, it's basically a 3 piece unit with the center throttle body, and the 2 float bowls some have a metering block on the front bowl only (4160 style) and a metering plate on...

First time pulling a riser with questions about condition w pics

When you blow those pix up you see a lot of pitting, on the sealing surfaces. Remember that sealing surface is what keeps water out of the cyls. Usually you can't see the pitting until you get all the gasket material off and take a good close look. These surfaces should look like smooth shiny...

First time pulling a riser with questions about condition w pics

You can use OMC gasket sealer or Permatex Aviation when you put those back in, just to make it easier to remove them when you do replace the manifolds eventually. Those elbows that the hoses connect to, save em because VP probably charges $15 each for them! They are actually OMC spec parts. The...

Omc 4.3? What did i buy?

Even with the flat tappet pre-vortec block, you could probably add the vortec heads and a 4bbl vortec intake and perk it up a bit (20-25 hp). I actually prefer the older pre-vortecs with the roller cam for the simple reasons that they have an adjustable valve train, they can use a simple and...
