First time pulling a riser with questions about condition w pics

What I said, don’t like that crack in the outlet of the elbow that suggests significant rust. See how they can look good on the outside but problems are lurking within...

First time pulling a riser with questions about condition w pics

What I do is prop it up level, pour it in via the feed hose till it reaches nearly the top of the manifold and watch the level, see if it drops & watch the exhaust ports.

First time pulling a riser with questions about condition w pics

Not really as long as the sealing surfaces clean up well. I might check for leaks by filling with acetone (careful flammable), acetone will find leaks that water won’t. Here in the salt pond it’s fairly common that people will put new elbows on the old manifolds and then change both during the...

First time pulling a riser with questions about condition w pics

Hello ok I don’t like that crack on the outlet of the elbow. I’d at least replace the elbows since they usually rot out faster. I’d think about getting the sealing surfaces of the manifolds re surfaced at a machine shop if they look good otherwise.

350 Mag MPI Horizon died at sea, cannot find the problem.

yep we all love electronic injection in our modern cars that run the same day after day, we never had that with carbs back in the '70s due to poor implementation of emissions regs. However when you grow up with Quadrajets, Holleys and Carters (now Edelbrock) it gets in your blood and you always...

350 Mag MPI Horizon died at sea, cannot find the problem.

We get similar weather to what you have in Scotland but a periods of colder weather, combined with frequent dampness and hotter in the summer. So plenty of opportunity for condensation which is what causes corrosion. All distributors should have vents, there will be a screen in a marine unit...

Omc 4.3? What did i buy?

Ah I don’t recall you saying you originally had a 96. Well it can be made to work depending on what accessory pulley set up the 96 has. You need to find out is your 96 a Vortec? Count the bolts holding down the intake manifold if it’s 8 bolts it’s a Vortec if 12 it’s a pre Vortec. The Vortec...

Neutra Salt System Solenoid and pully question VP 5.7 Gi-f

Ok see it now. Yes those tensioners are commonly used I have one on my ‘07 Jeep 5.7 Hemi. My ancient 4.3 still has V belts.

Omc 4.3? What did i buy?

Ok from the 14088553 the 553 is the actual casting #, that lines up with a 1986-1988 with one piece main seal. The 14094768 head casting number lines up with the same year range The .20 might be the size the cyls were bored during the rebuild. The T#s are probably a GM serial number, the T...

Volvo Penta 5.7Gi Closed Cooling Question

It’s hard to tell from pix but try tapping them with a small hammer, if it makes a sharp ring then they probably are still solid, if they make a dull thud with flakes falling off they need to be replaced.

Omc 4.3? What did i buy?

You have to be more specific, which numbers came from where on the engine. You should be looking at the block casting # right behind cyl #6, and the cyl head casting #s that you can see when you take off the valve covers. The marine Fel/Pro head gaskets are blue.

Neutra Salt System Solenoid and pully question VP 5.7 Gi-f

Your actual boat is different than the diagram you posted. That diagram had a tensioner, on yours you seem to have 2 idlers. The adjustment is made by moving either the alternator or the P/S pump, whichever it is that has adjustable mounts. Its a good idea at the start of each season to loosen...

New Gimbal bearing won’t take grease

Try reaching in and turning the bearing while greasing it. I use Lucas marine grease (blue grease) and no problem with greasing it.

Omc 4.3? What did i buy?

It could be a truck motor or even a Merc 4.3 since theirs were painted black instead of grey. The differences were stainless steel head gaskets and brass freeze plugs. If it’s a year older than your engine that could explain the flat tapper cam. I have a 1988 original OMC 4.3 and it has the...

New Gimbal bearing won’t take grease

Are you sure this is a greasable gimble bearing? Because the newer ones are often not greasable. Another foolish idea from Merc & Volvo.

Should I keep the Volvo 280?

Yep there are deals out there I’m thinking its guys in freshwater regions parting out rotted 30 year old boats. I collected enough Cobra stuff to keep me going for years. For a minimal investment really.

Neutra Salt System Solenoid and pully question VP 5.7 Gi-f

Not familiar with the neutra salt system but the pulley you referenced is simply an idler pulley and the tensioner is part # 11. If you need to replace there is a Volvo Penta parts catalog linked to iBoats you need your model # to order parts. The bearings in the idler and tensioner can wear out...

Volvo Penta 5.7Gi Closed Cooling Question

Your temps in the vid really didn’t go over 175* even after you slowed down. I’m surprised that Volvo says that the temps of 30 over what’s normal for raw water cooling are expected I’d have thought more like about 180. Ok so your temps appear normal it may look high because of the gauge used...
