Block draining idea for older Mercruiser v8

Actually you would be better off, redesigning the seat, to make it less difficult to remove. That's what I did on my '88 FW H-200. I got rid of that heavy bench seat that was impossible to move and made a new rear bulkhead that is split down the middle vertically. There is a take apart hinge in...

Even fuses that are used in an enclosed engine compartment have to be of a certain type to prevent ignition of fumes; you shouldn’t use the ATO style (metal strip is exposed) but use the ATC style (metal strip is enclosed in the plastic housing of the fuse), I discovered this doing some wiring...

1988 GM 5L, spark plugs too tight to get out....

I would let whatever penetrating oil you use really soak in, re apply over several days then warm up the engine first before trying again. This works with removing stuck O2 sensors on automotive engines. I was able to remove a 19 year old O2 sensor on our ‘98 Jeep 4.0 this way. Came right out...

1988 GM 5L, spark plugs too tight to get out....

As a habit I've taken mine out each year to check for water in the cyls, and I've never had trouble getting them out even with the old cyl heads and 100% salt water use for the past 15+ years...

If its a Ford engine it probably takes Champion spark plugs, those are not marine specific, the distributor cap is though. There is an SAE spec for ignition and electrical parts for inboard boats that parts must meet for safety. Spark plugs just look up the Champion parts # and got to an auto...

1988 GM 5L, spark plugs too tight to get out....

These are taper seat plugs not with gaskets. Try spraying penetrating oil in the spark plug wells to dissolve any corrosion give it a few days to soak in then warm up the engine & try again. I had to do the same thing to get an O2 sensor out of the down pipe on our ‘98 Jeep...

I put the plugs back in because the cast iron threads can rust over the winter. I put some Evinrude gasket sealer on the threads. Hoses, I put some grease on the necks they fit on to prevent corrosion and that makes it easier to remove them next time. Drive, if you’re older or have a bad lower...

Volvo Penta 4.3 GXi-JF closed cooling draining

The fogging oil will just burn off, I fill the fuel filter with gas to make it easier for the fuel pump to prime. Important esp with electric pumps.

For the hoses, I put some grease on the necks on the water pump and thermo housing that keeps the hoses from getting stuck on. The moisture from the starboard side suggests there may be water in the pocket in the pivot housing where the bell crank lives. Check that when you pull the drive. Might...

Volvo Penta 4.3 GXi-JF closed cooling draining

Honestly if I had that set up on my engine that is one case where I'd use the winterizing tank, with a livewell pump to pressurize the flow, and -100 antifreeze or 50/50 Sierra mixed up with water. That will fill the raw water intake hose, impeller, raw water side of the H/E and manifolds with...

Replacing batwing manifold questions (and other questions)

The parts are identical same part numbers etc. Remember OMC and Volvo had a joint venture from 1994-1998 and Volvo actually used a lot of OMC parts, like the exhaust, the thermostat housing, power steering coolers etc. The exhaust parts are no longer sold by OMC but they are sold by Volvo Penta...

duoprop shake slowly when turn right-left

you will usually get some vibration when the steering is cranked over all the way one way or the other since U joints are not designed for extreme angle use like CV joints are, but I know there were some complaints on the Volvos of the steering oscillating from side to side during low speed...

The pic you posted is the oil cooler for the power steering system, water flows through from the transom mount on its way up to the thermostat housing. Doesn't matter if you drain water before changing the gear oil. However, MAKE SURE you change the drive oil the way OMC recommended and replace...

Ok I’d still try to disconnect the bottom end of the big hose because on the GM engines this holds a lot of water (inside the circulating pump) I’m not sure if the same is true on the Ford engines which is what you have. For the P/S cooler there is a drain plug on it but they can be tough to...

    Sold Candia 19'

I know what you mean, I have that same attachment to our old boat even though it’s a lot of work. My solution in the future will be a new engine with closed cooling & a remote oil filter mount both will make the maintenance much easier.

Replacing batwing manifold questions (and other questions)

The question is why did the block crack? A rusted or cracked manifold would cause water ingestion not necessarily a cracked block. If your 2008 Vortec was a marine block then replacing it with the same thing should allow you to use all of your accessories. The intake can be checked by a machine...

Boat docked at slip- little water getting in bilge????

Thanks! It's 32 years old! Might want to check your driveshaft bellows sooner rather than later, don't want water sitting in it over the winter.

Yep any water that gets in there you want it to be able to drain out. I also remove the outdrive and put a cover on the opening in the transom mount.
