yes that drains the bilge, remove it or else if water leaks in round the cover your bilge will be full of water, ruining the starter and freezing into a block of ice! That's the first thing I do when I pull the boat for the season.

Just as a data point, there is exactly 1 dealer that comes up as being trained to install the Holley Sniper system in the entire metro NY area. I searched on Holley's site. Not sure if they even do marine work. So if you do an install and run into a problem you have there is only one shop who's...

Boat docked at slip- little water getting in bilge????

While you hate to miss boating time sometimes its better to go through everything in the off season, to make sure its ready for the next one. I have found that if you can store the boat with the drive down the bellows can last as long as 10 years but at that point the rubber is getting stiffer...

    Oil capacity?? 1988 GM 5L

With some of these dipstick designs, there is a quirk that you have to get used to in that they will read low right after the engine is shut down, then if you pull the stick out and allow the level in the dipstick tube to equalize, it reads correctly. With a cold engine sometimes the opposite...

While it’s true that there will be thousands of GM MPI engines in use the applicability of that to marine use (do it yourselfers fixing their own boats) will only work if the parts are identical to marine operating parameters. For instance we know that Marine carbs and ignition systems have to...

    Oil capacity?? 1988 GM 5L

My OMC shop manual says 5 qts without filter and 6 qts with. I'd put in a 1/2 qt less and recheck, then fill to just under the fill line. It takes a few minutes for the oil level to stabilize in that tube after you pull out the dipstick so wait for just a bit before checking. Sometimes you don't...

The Ford family of small blocks starting with the 260, 289, 302, 351 both W (Windsor) and C (Cleveland) were as common as Chevrolet small blocks in the USA and were in just about everything Ford built for literally a generation. From Mustangs to F250 pick ups .The simple reason to go carb...

Yep that was my thought process I can still get parts for a 30+ year old Quadrajet, and a mechanical fuel pump is like $85 depending on where you buy it...

1990 Mercruiser 5.7/v8 rusted exhaust manifold bolt

Yep you’d think so as long as no water in the oil or cylinders it should be ok

    1995 Volvo Penta 5.8 FSI

Approx $1390 less the fuel pump, not bad for what it is. The carb conversion could be done for about 800 or so depending on what you have to pay for the carb, those prices can vary if Holley runs sales. I wonder if they can find a local dealer with tech support if you have any issues with the...

1990 Mercruiser 5.7/v8 rusted exhaust manifold bolt

And if the manifolds were welded up (freeze damage) I wonder if you will find JB weld patching freeze cracks on the side of the block...because if someone let it freeze and the manifolds cracked, the engine might have as well. Is the oil clean, or milky?

The decals are wrong but I do think that’s a Four Winns hull; probably a 195 Sundowner

357 mag bravo 4v long block replacement

Yep that looks worse than my old heads when I had both HGs blown! If the cyls did not get rusted up you might able to save it with reman heads like I did.

    1993 4.3 engine winterization

Sounds like you got it right, I'd just disconnect the raw water intake hose where it connects to the thermostat housing, put the drive down and point that hose down so it drains, then fill it with -100 AF till it runs out the drive water intakes. Bump starter for a sec, that puts AF in the...

You have to hit the drop down it will show more years going way back, I even found the catalogs for my '88 H-200 in there.

    Awful Boat-Outboard Mismatch.-

I looked round their old catalogs, there was a 195 Sundowner outboard, this is a 19.5" boat, I think the one in the pics is mis labeled, a 210 Sundowner would be 20'10" long which I don't think that one is. In fact I don't think there was ever a 210 Sundowner outboard model built. What is the...

    1992 Mercruiser 4.3L 262 CID Pre-Vortex Back Fires

Even some of the manuals tell you to spin the pushrod, but the moving it up and down method I think is more accurate, I think friction can throw off the spinning the pushrod method. If its backfiring through the carb an intake valve staying slightly open could cause that too, from too tight...

    Awful Boat-Outboard Mismatch.-

Take a look at the Four Winns website, there are older catalogs available on their site... When the outboard is tilted down the anti cavitation plate should be at about the same height as the keel. Talk about a bad match the trailer is even worse, that axle has to go way back for it to be...

    Winterizing

First you have to have a hose that puts out good water pressure and is not kinked. If you're doing this at home make sure someone is not taking a shower or doing the wash at the same time because it will drop the water pressure enough to overheat the engine... Put the muffs on the lower unit...

Cooling Intake line issue - What next?

Interesting and not that uncommon on salt water boats. On my OMC Cobra there was a plastic water screen in the lower unit just like on the Johnson & Evinrude outboards. Because my boat is moored in salt water approx 5-6 months each season even with painting it with anti fouling paint I still had...
