    Some will argue and hesitate---A 50 year old hydro-electric needs a tear down / inspection / reseal if reverse is misbehaving .-----Simple to do and simple is my opinion !

    Remove power head.----Inspect crankshaft lower seal.-----If that seal is good.----Take engine apart.----Should be easy to find the damage then.

    Each cylinder has a sealed crankcase.------No vacuum means ----A hole in the block.-----Blown crankcase lower seal.-----Bad lower labarynth seal.----Fuel pump diaphragm ( air motor on VRO ) bad -Are you saying there is nothing happening with a piece of paper in front of the lower seal ?

    Winterize

    Dealer I know keeps track of weather in the fall.-----When he get a call to winterize a boat AFTER a cold snap he takes action.------Customer brings boat in and engine is started up right then and there.-----They thoroughly check for water leaks.----Then agree to winterize ASAP.

    Working on a V-4 for a dealer , had cowling foam stuck in the reed valves.

    They were the same plug / thread size from about 1950 to 2000 models.----On bigger motor there was a magnet to filter metal bits out of the oil.

    Model # needed.----There was no 70 HP marketed in 1971.-----You should open the box up and have a look for broken parts , loose wires.

    You could run that oil for 10 years if you run 3 hrs a season.

    Find a shop with a test prop.-----See if it reaches the RPM stated in the manual.

    The 3 cylinders OMC motors used them from 1968 to 2001.----Machined into the block.----Have inspected the insides of many of them myself !

    If a piece broke off the piston skirt it pops a hole in the crankcase.----No crankcase compression.------If the bottom seal is bad then no / little crankcase compression.----Remove powerhead and start inspection.---- Bearings may have failed wiping out the labarynth seals.
