    Well----8" above the impeller is 8" above the impeller.----If you think 4" above the trim tab is good then good luck with it.

    Was the water 8" above the impeller ?-----Yes the exhaust cover stays much cooler than cylinder heads.----Test the overheat warning horn next.

    The lower needle is for full throttle operation.---Set at about 3/4 turn out.----The upper needle is for low speed operation , set at 1-1/2 turns out.----This allows the motor to start and keep running.---You must adjust after that for best operation out on the boat.-----Lower one first then...

    F_R----We understood how these motors worked back then.-----I do not recall any customers asking to get a tell tale ( pisser ) installed 40 / 50 years ago.

    If you pulled the shift rod out of the lower unit , then yes.----But doubt you did that.----Have you looked for the tutorial as mentioned ?-----Have you looked at the simple instruction / followed them from post #13 ???----Sorry, This is really simple.

    The big o-ring is a main seal.----It is NOT a back up for anything !-----There are many leak points on one of those lower units.----Pressure testing is easy.

    Air gets / is blended into the oil.-----Check it after it sits for a day or so.

    A 2 stroke or 4 stroke ?------Are you pushing key in and holding it in while cranking on cold start ?--Revisit carburetor work.
