    1985 model.---Need to install a new water pump impeller.------Pull one plug wire off at a time and try to start it.-----Or do that with motor running.----Report what you find.----Does primer ball go hard ?-----Did this motor sit for a long time , as in years and years ?

    Took one of those apart a while ago.---Had to figure out the way it bolted on there..-----No brute force required to remove pinion here.----The new pinion will need to be shimmed correctly.

    Test compression with another gauge.----Those numbers are low,-----Sounds like it is running on 3 of 4 cylinders.-----When was a new water pump impeller installed ?------Does spark jump a gap of 3/8" ( 1 cm ) on all leads ?-----Some will argue, but I would pull bypass covers to have a look at...

    There is an o-ring or quad ring on the fuel valve.----Did you replace it ?-----I think these tanks are very good.

    Lower drain plug screw?

    Item #6 is the upper VENT screw on these and may be different than #10.----So fill gear oil from bottom till it comes out the vent.

    You have a blown head gasket or broken rings.----Pull cylinder head.----You need 4 new pistons.------Broken rings is the most common failure on these.----It will happen to every crossflow !!

    A fluid needs heat to evaporate.-----Hence the intake gets cold.-----You have heard of carburetor icing on small airplanes ??

    There are 2 hole4s ( 10-24NC ) to mount the pump.-----There should be a gasket.------The hole in the middle provides a PRESSURE pulse to drive the pump.

    Doubt that impeller was the reason for overheating.-----Looks like it might be new.------The old one is what you want to look at.

    If they are bent like that the impeller is scrap.------See what a new one looks like.-----Then you can make the easy and correct decision.

    2005 Johnson 90hp 4-Stroke J90PL4SO Lower Unit Knock at Idle Forward/Reverse

    With a high speed camera you would observe what happens to that heavy prop.----The engine fires ~ 4 times for every revolution of the ---PROPSHAFT----And accelerates that heavy prop 4 times.----Not visible to the eyes at normal speed.

    You took out the pivot pin for the shifter.-----Not the same as the drain screw.-----And carefull getting that in as stripping the internal thread will be a big issue !!!

    1960 Johnson sea king 40hp fuel/oil in test bucket.

    Ran at 24:1 in those days.-----And yes that is normal for that vintage motor.---Yes some gas and oil goes right through a conventional 2 stroke and is wasted.-----There may be things that can be modified to reduce the sludge.-----Not quick and easy.-----
