    If reverse lock does NOT WORK the motor could tip up and over rev with prop out of the water.------Motor will not start ( no spark ) if operator has " ramp fever " and tries starting before checking if motor is in correct position !-----Find a better project motor.

    These motors ( 402 models ) had a history of the crankshaft breaking.-----I would not want one on my boat.

    My guess is water getting under the paint.----Corrosion occurred.----Aluminum behaves the same over all the years.

    There is nothing wrong with the concept of electric shifting.-----What you need to look at is how the new " super " and big 4 strokes do the shifting today.

    This motor is a corroded piece of junk.-----Worth 10 cents / lbs.-----Lots of better projects out there to restore.

    You would have to provide some beer tokens for such information.-----Many parts sites on line to find those part numbers.-----Donor motors will show up for $200 or so.

    A donor motor is your best option.-----Any one of the 2 cylinder 40 / 50 from 89 and newer.----The 3 cylinder 25 / 35 may also be an option.

    I used to keep a prop with a section cut out to show those " newbies " that there are rubber hubs in props.

    Motor has to run / turn to build oil pressure for shifting.------The electric shift was well engineered , well built and reliable.----Just not well understood.

    If it has the " comet " sticker it is the 7.5 HP model.-----The 7.5 HP block has SMALLER intake ports.

    Well ----It does have a rubber bushing !------So try another prop.

    Same drain plug as used for gearcase oil.-----Should be easy to find.
