Thats not the positive reassurance i was looking for lol
So now you have a motor ( 1971 or 1972) with electric shift .----And a motor with an ignition system that is not in the top 10 on the hit parade------Nothing wrong with the electric shift if you understand how it works.-----Not easy to find a shop to work on those.

Test the lower before you do a lot.
Hook up a battery, shift the gears and have someone turn the prop
and see if it goes into gear.
These electric gear boxes can be a bigger nightmare.
If it works? keep an eye on the oil, water's is not a good thing, salt water is a killer.
Oh yea takes a special oil 80-90 too thick.

Motor has to run / turn to build oil pressure for shifting.------The electric shift was well engineered , well built and reliable.----Just not well understood.

There is nothing wrong with the concept of electric shifting.-----What you need to look at is how the new " super " and big 4 strokes do the shifting today.
