Hope this is helpful
Yes . it seems to match up with the schematic you thought, like I said; sometime people add/change components that will work from different years. It interesting to see that they made Chrysler motors in Barrie, Ontario (about a hours drive from me)

Ok so i got the ignition wired up as per diagram, and still having issues. Bypassed the ignition and put power right to the starter and there was an unusual amount of sparks from what looked like the inside of the starter and found this (see attached video) dosnt look right to me, so im sourcing a starter now. (Opened it up and found broken magnet chunks inside as well)

Yeah... the starter may have been dropped or been hammered (bad habit) to get it to crank.
look for a good used (USA made) one. (most) cheap new ones ($85) are imports and are either no good or won't last
inspect the old Starter to see if the brushes and armature are still good??
A lot of times you can make a good working one out 2/3 broken ones

We've all hammered a starter once or twice...

So took forever but got the new starter, but im still getting nothing from the key. I can engage the choke but nothing from the motor. Im kinda lost now. Im down to 1) ive wired the key switch wrong 2)bad solenoid or 3) i havnt a clue what im doing and dun multiple things wrong and should just buy a running motor and give up on saving a 50+ yr old motor. Any suggestions?

Ontario Watercraft----Used to be the dealer in Hamilton.-----Factory in Barrie is on east side of the 400 .----Still there but divided up into various industrial units.

The start circuit is as simple as the hot wire (yellow or yellow/red) when key in start position from keyswitch S terminal goes to the terminal stripe at engine. From the stripe to the interlocking switch (shifter needs to be in neutral when starting) at the shift lever and then to the starter solenoid.
The solenoid should "click" when engage the key to starting position.
If not, check the starting circuit with a VOM and you should have 12VDC at solenoid measured to ground.
If you have a solenoid with two small and to large terminals one of the small need a wire from one of the terminals to ground, if there is only one small terminal the housing of the solenoid is ground.
If you have 12VDC at the solenoid and no action to the starter the solenoid is bad.

As Nordin already mentioned; make sure your shifter is in neutral but also make sure the neutral-switch is pushed-in (located at the controls on engine side)
IF pushed in...you could put a jumper across (to check if switch is good)

Sorry guys... I gave up on her. I sold the motor last night and bought a evinrude 125. I took the easy way out, but i have hit the limit of my abilities with this one. Wish me luck on moving forward with the evinrude. Ill keep posing updates on the project for those who stay interested

So now you have a motor ( 1971 or 1972) with electric shift .----And a motor with an ignition system that is not in the top 10 on the hit parade------Nothing wrong with the electric shift if you understand how it works.-----Not easy to find a shop to work on those.
