    Those 40 HP motors were elegantly simple.----The average person can learn to maintain / service it with simple tools.-----First thing to do is a compression test.----Then check for spark to jump a 1/4" gap.----New impeller.----Inspect thermostat.----Change gear oil.

    Strange Motor Behaviour.-

    Running a motor wide open in neutral is a mistake.------And a 2 cylinder motor will sound wonderful at full throttle on just one cylinder !!----Means nothing.

    Looks like a 1966 to me.-----Model # will be found on a plate up above the transom clamps.----RDS-28 I would think.

    There is no such thing as a " dry start up " on a water pup impeller.------On muffs or boat launched the water pump will be flooded with WATER , which is the lubricant !------The grease or other potion will be gone after a few minutes.-----People do not lubricate water pumps 6 months after the...

    Lots of water in the oil means just one thing.-----Lower unit needs a seal kit.----Simple , " pay me now or pay me later " scenario.

    That is a safety switch and not a condenser.----Shuts motor off should you hit a log and motor jumps out of the water.------No need to post pictures of that bad wire , most have seen many examples of bad wiring on this era of Mercury products.

    My advice is always the same.-----Do a complete evaluation of the motor before spending any coins.----Carefully check all wiring.-----Compression test , post the numbers.-----Remove bypass covers to inspect pistons and rings.----Inspect gears, bearings and seals in lower unit.-----Carburetor...

    Not a ----SUZUKI ----Built motor either !!-----And JOHNSON marketed small 4 strokes built by SUZUKI from 2002 and on for a few years.----I do not believe EVINRUDE marketed small ( 9,9 / 15 HP ) 4 strokes built by SUZUKI.

    Some will argue.----How much water was in there ?-------If there was a lot of water then the gearcase needs to come apart for inspection of the bearings , shafts and gears.----Or run it till it goes ---" boom "---I guess.
