    There is supposed to be an o-ring in a groove at the top of the drive shaft.-----Grease is to be used on the spline.----O-ring keeps water out.-------Many motors were not maintained properly.

    Do a compression test and report the numbers you get.----Revisit your water pump work.------Hopefully you are running at 24:1 mix ratio.-------I doubt this is a fuel / oil issue !!!!

    Nope----Just remove the cylinder head and it will be obvious what is wrong.------Scored cylinders or a hole in a piston

    It almost appears that BG garage is unsure of how to remove tapered dowels on these motors.----Trying to hammer them out in the wrong direction.

    Use a load tested battery and good booster cables.----Or perhaps send the starter from the " hooflungdung " company back and try a factory starter.-----Or bring it over as this sort of thing is easy to test / figure out.

    Correct , those bigger Evinrudes 1999 / 2001 or so and later Johnsons big (eg 2005 model 225 hp ) and small were built by SUZUKI 1998 to 2005.-----Now the smaller 9.9 / 15 HP from 1996 to 2000 were their own design and not SUZUKI.-----Ok my years might be off by a bit.------I do not believe...

    1956 Johnson 10 HP QD-17

    Common issue with neglected motors.----Make an adapter to clamp on the driveshaft.----Use a slide hammer to pull the shaft out.-----There may be other methods such as a vice along with jacking screws.

    They are not that hard to work on !!----Most shops won't work on them because folks will complain on seeing the invoice for SKILLED work.------New motors are easy revenue generators and often just require " white gloves " to bring in revenue.

    1958 5.1/2 hp Evinrude model 5516 cowl removal

    Sorry on some Evinrude models you have to take out 2 screws on one side and screws on carburetor knobs to remove the cowling.----Haven not worked on one in a while.----And not going to run out to the shop to look at one right now.

    If you know it is a 95 model then ordering parts would be easy.-----Depends on what parts you need.----Most parts are the same from one to the other except shaft length / counter rotating parts.----Post a picture if graphics are unmolested.

    Swing rear up.-----Remove / loosen rubber strap if still equipped with that item.------Slide assembly forward to take it off.

    New rings in worn piston grooves is a bad , bad concept on these motors with " pressure back rings " in them.-----It can be hard to convince folks with used boats to do some simple inspection.----Remove 4 bypass covers and look at pistons and rings.

    Inspection is so easy on these motors I say.-----Find out about the condition of cylinders now.-----Not 1 day after launching.------Well then pull the 4 bypass covers ( 6 screws each ) to look at pistons an rings.----Cost you 4 gaskets $2.00 each.-----Yes parts and cylinders are precision made...

    Yes the hull is fiberglass.----Nothing goes wrong with the hull over time.----Well it fades from the sun exposure I guess.----But if the structure ( transom , stringers ) are built with cheap wood there can be issues with rot.-----Those often show up and are uber expensive to correct.-----Motors...

    There is a different interpretation of what ----" rebuilt " ----actually means.-----Properly done it is not cheap and results should make it run like new.-----But you can have the motor fully checked out , compression test and dynamometer test run.------Then there is the hull to worry about too.

    Well------" old motor " -----Is a relative term.------Friends have a 1984 model 115 HP inline 6.------Still runs like a top.------Runs on a small lake for not much more that 30 / 40 hrs a season.

    The motor is 40 years old !-----A head gasket is cheap.-----Pull the head where you see the 95 PSI compression.------I like to see 120 PSI on these.-----And parts are not made like they were in the 1950's these days.--Compression should be the same.--Compression is such a hard thing to explain...
