    HDDVD or BluRay DVD?

Got a DVD set (Planet Earth) for Xmas that is a HDDVD. May be time to upgrade my player. Some basic questions: 1. Will this HD disk play on a regular player? The label says use only on a HDDVD player. 2. Would my DVD collection play on a HDDVD player? 3. Is there any compatibility between...

    First effort making candy

I never made candy before but I have a superabundance of pecans this year, so I started through my cookbooks. Everything calls for candy thermometers and refers to "soft ball stage", whatever the heck that is. I have no candy thermometer and I don't speak "ball stage", soft or hard. But My #2...

    Not really about religion, but...

Got this from #2 daughter. Brett Favre, after living a full life, died. When he got to heaven, God was showing him around. They came to a modest little house with a faded Packer's flag in the window. "This house is yours for eternity, Brett," said God. "This is very special; not everyone gets...

    The Hotline

Got this from my Brother: John Madden was in Green Bay to announce a football game one weekend when he noticed a special telephone near the Packers' bench. He asked QB Bret Favre what it was used for and was told it was a hotline to God. John asked if he could use it. Favre replied, 'Sure...

What I am most thankful for.

    * Most, I think, my descendants. Thirteen and counting. I see them and who they are as my immortality and cherish them beyond words. * The love of my life, Elizabeth (Leisel). * The Hideout, and my life here. * iboats.com, who have offered me the opportunity to continue to be useful and...

    Who is stealing my pecans?

Maybe it is those Maine monkeys. Got a bumper crop of pecans this year. I have about 50 trees. Squirrels and crows are getting their share, deer are eating some, but. . . I have been picking up the big Stewarts because they are my favorites. Have about 50 gallons so far with many more yet to...

AUGH!! This is awful! Then I made it worse.

I have (had) aol 9.0. Today it refused to load, telling me that I didn't have enough memory and I should deinstall some programs. So I went to Control Panel and deinstalled some useless (to me) stuff. AOL was not satisfied. So I really screwed up:eek: I have Garmin Mapsource. I forgot...

AUGH! Where's SBN when you need him?

Spinner is the one who logs on in the wee-est hours and posts birthday greetings. He's off camping, so he missed my birthday. :( I probably don't have many left, so I want to make the most of each one.

    How come?

I've been watching commercials for chemicals to cure/prevent anything known to man and clips in news shows warning about the dangers of all of the same stuff. Now I wonder how anyone in my generation and our parents generation ever made it past 40. Sixty years ago. . . * Paint had lead in...

    Planting black walnuts.

I don't think there is any more valuable timber in the US than black walnut. About 12 years ago I planted about a dozen nuts, about 4" deep in poor clayey soil. Most of them came up but only one survived the late 90s-early 21st century drought to begin bearing last year. Now I have about a...

    Go Lewis. . .err. . . Kimi. . .um. . .Fernando!

Today is the Grand Prix of Brazil. Last race of the 2007 season. Three drivers are in contention for the world championship. Lewis Hamilton. Multi-ethnic British rookie of astounding talent leads by 4 points. McLaren Mercedes. Fernando Alonso. Spanish two-time Champion seeks a three-peat...

How good (or lucky) do you have to be

To give up 14 points to interception returns, plus three more ints and a fumble. . . Give up 7 points to kickoff returns. . . And still win the game? You gotta hold the opponent's offense to 3 points. . . And score 25. Ugly, ugly win, but the last minute of the game was flawlessly executed...

    What am I missing here?

I have had a Medicare Supplement insurance policy for about 8 years. Plan F, which was the best available at the time. My premiums started out at about $90/mo and stepped up each year and again each birthday until they are now $169.75/mo. Plan F covers what Medicare does not pay on most Medicare...

Why was the "Radio" thread deleted?

This one got away from us, folks. When SBN caught it there were too many forbidden commercial links to edit.:( Please read and understand rule #10. If a site sells or advertises anything it is a commercial site. It is okay to post the address in unclickable form but clickable links are...

    The broken spring legend.

Heard this back in the 40s about a supposed event in the thirties. There was a wealthy Englishman touring the Alps in his old Rolls Royce. He hit a pothole and broke a spring in the front. He limped in to a hotel and wired RR that he had a broken spring. The next day a tech showed up in a new...

    Hummingbird feeder troubles

This is the time of year that this begins, and it gets worse until they move on south. With nights in the 50s and 60s the nectar cools to air temp. Hummingbirds cannot fly unless their body temp exceeds 89*F. Many of these little beggars will come to the feeder in the first, pre-dawn light...

    The swarm gathers.

Transient hummingbirds are gathering at The Hideout on their way south. This shot show only one of my three feeders and only shows the birds willing to approach while I am standing by the feeder. There must have been over 100 of them swarming about this morning.:)
