Took her out for another spin

Crisp fall day and a flat lake, so I took the tinny out for another blast. Timing is now fully advanced to spec. Just need a proper prop, as it's revving a tad high. But maybe just a cupped 17" SST if I can find one. https://youtu.be/sbLxgYs2kbM

    Mystery propeller

Michigan PJ-10 - what's it for? Can't seem to cross it online as the part number shows a thru-hub exhaust. I think it's for a low-boy Sportwin 9-1/2 horse, 196? to 1973 since dad may have purchased it for our 1972 Sportwin.

Tried the Joe Reeves timing method

After running the motor for the summer, and knowing the timing was off (deliberately retarded), I took the time to do the Joe Reeves static timing test today. Pulled all the plugs, grounded 2,3 and 4, set #1 plug in place, shell grounded and attached the timing light. Initial spin showed timing...

    Carbs for a 140 x-flow

My motor is running with original '79 1-3/8" carbs. These are the more primitive units that have only idle and high speed jets. Midrange fuelling is simply controlled by the HS jets and the emulsion tubes at various throttle positions. My throttle shafts are quite worn - can move them about...

    Standard transom angle?

I'm going to build a motor stand for my 'rude V4. Anybody know the standard transom angle used for outboards?

    Dyno testing

A local shop has an outboard dyno that's basically just a water pump load cell with a pressure gauge. Apparently there's a table of pressures for outboards to give equivalent to HP ratings. Anybody know what the correct numbers would be for a '79-82 crossflow 140? BTW, the guy running this shop...

Prop for upped HP on rebuilt Xflow

Hi - I just finished building a 140HP powerhead as a replacement for the 90 I had on my old boat. The rebuild was done using a '79 140 block/heads/bubble exhaust/carbs, with rotating parts, new 0.030" os pistons/rings, and electricals from the original '82 90 motor. From the pan down, it's an...

    Rev limiting power packs

I'm running the original 1982 power packs on my rebuilt '79/82 140, and I understand these are non-limited packs. I also understand the ones with limiters are set at 5800 rpm max. I read that the non-limited packs are preferable to the limited ones, but if max RPM for the crossflow V4 is 5500...

    New kicker

Found this on our local auction site for the price of a tank of gas. https://youtu.be/vwOCuCWZXa0 '84 model. Compression is good. Seems to run cool, but the gas valve leaks badly. I'll need to give it some TLC - maybe an impeller and a carb cleaning. It'll make a good emergency kicker for...

    Re-painting ol' scruffy - '82 90/140

I know it's far off, but when the boating season is done for the year (early October), I think I'll build a wheeled stand, yank the motor, and store it inside since I don't have inside storage for the boat itself. Mostly to keep it warm and protected from the -30C weather but partly for...

I think my '82 OMC tach is lame

Pretty sure I'm passing 4400 rpm, but the tach seems to disagree. Thoughts?? https://youtu.be/36-azXGY-0g

    Beer money

Cleaning up the garage after the rebuild, I took 78 pounds of cast aluminium to the local metal recycle yard and they paid me C$28. Should be good for a couple cases of brew, and now my garage looks less like a wrecking yard. MOD EDIT - Sorry, we can't do this.

    Shakedown for the new rebuild

Got the new 140 on the lake today for shakedown. Ran great all the way through the first tank (6US gal). Now I've seen lots of posts about running more oil than 50:1 for break-in so I added another 250mL to the tank even though the original manual says use 50:1, so maybe 32:1. Ran it for the...

Gel seal (Loctite 518) with primer?

Getting ready to button up the crank case. The Loctite 518 card says to use "Kleen n Prime" on one surface, but I've seen numerous cases where none was used. Haven't found any locally - should I go ahead and assemble without?

    Jetting for high altitude?

My primary use for my soon to be finished outboard rebuild is well above sea level. Local lake is above 3300 feet, and most anything within reasonable travel is above 1500 feet. Main jets are 65C, idle 30. Presumably (?) they're calibrated for sea level use. Thoughts?

    Digital tach/hour meter

Since I'm rebuilding my motor, it would be a good starting point for having an hour meter. I found a digital tach/hour meter here...

Retrofit '82 primer from '79 choke

While waiting for the machine shop to get their finger out, I've been playing with the parts some more. I'd really prefer to have the primer working on the finished project vs flappy chokes so I took a good look at the carbies from both motors. The carbs form the '79 140 appear to be a lot more...

    Is my block really toast?

Took my '79 crossflow block to a local Calgary AB marina for inspection and got some less than good news from the old timer who runs the place. Says the center bearing mount is no good due to the prior repair incorrectly seating the center bearing off the pin. This could scuttle my rebuild...

Getting ready to work on the 140

After much procrastination, the 140 project is ready to hang on a standared automotive engine stand. I'd thought of building something out of wood but found this locally for $40. Why not?

Last day on the lake, then uh-oh

The outlaws are in town for Thanksgiving and dad wanted to do some fishing. We were out trolling around for a couple of hours with the odd fast run to another spot. During one of those fast transits, the old 90 started bogging and sputtering. Limped it back to the launch at around 2000 rpm with...
