    checking dwell

Can you check the dwell while cranking the engine or does it have to be running? I've only ever done the kind with the window on the cap that you adjust while running the engine. This doesn't have the window, It's a merc 140. '76 model.

    impromtu lower unit stand

As I was sitting at the picnic table trying to figure out how I was going to mate my lower & upper drives back together by myself with no type of stand it dawned on me that I could use the table. So I set the lower up on the picnic table with the skeg slid down in the gap between the 2x6's on...

    marine carburetor?

As I was priming my carb today before trying to fire it up for the first time in a couple seasons, it dawned on me that the vent tube did not bend over & point into the throttle bore, as I was filling the float bowl via the straight vent tube. The part # on the mercruiser tag & the stamped code...

    shift interrupter

What exactly is the shift interrupter & what is it for? I did a search & couldn't really find an explanation. And does my '76 have one? It's a 140 3.0L #1(R) drive. Thanks.

    trim switch

On this 76 merc 140 3.0 w/ #1 drive, there is a light blue & a purple wire going to the trim switch in the gimbal housing, are these wires just to operate the dash mounted trim gauge or do they have to do with the actual operation of the trim motor?

    Awesome forum, thanks everyone!

I just wanted to take a min to express my appreciation for this forum & everyone who posts on here. This forum is an amazing asset to the do-it-yourselfer folks who like to fix their own stuff. And the people on here are incredibly knowledgeable on the subject. I've been wrenching on anything...

    shift cable?

Ok one more thing I've found that I'm not sure of on this #1 outdrive. There is a long rectangle piece of the shift mechanism that slides back & forth in a pocket in the upper housing as you operate the shifter. It is bone dry & full of sand & dirt. After I get it cleaned up should it be greased...

    outdrive gasket set?

Can anyone tell me if this gasket set includes the o-ring that seals the water port between the upper drive housing & I think it's called the bell housing? Where the upper drive housing mates to. I want to make sure that o-ring is included before I order it & I can't find any listing for the...

    shift shaft washer?

Ok, I had mentioned this in another post but thought I'd start a new post for this problem. In servicing the water pump impeller on a '76 mercruiser #1 drive Serial #4432173, I learned about the washer that is supposed to be on the shift shaft in the lower unit before mating it back to the...

shifter moved back to nuetral while lower unit is off

I've got the lower unit off of my 76 3.0L 140 mercruiser w/ #1 drive & I had put the shifter in forward gear prior to pulling the lower off & now I look & some knucklehead has put the shifterback in neutral. Probably my father in law as he's kinda analabout some stuff. Is it just as simple as...

    3.0L coil

I've got a '76 140 3.0L mercruiser & every season when we would first get it ready to go on the water it would not have spark & I would have to swap out the coil with a spare one & it would run fine all season until after it sat all winter & I'd have to swap back to the other coil to get it to...

    exhaust tube?

What is the difference between a regular bellows & an exhaust tube? Does the tube just dump the exhaust right at the gimbal housing & not go through the outdrive & prop??? Thanks. Jim.

rebuild kits for carter fuel pumps?

I've got a mercruiser 140 3.0L & I'm trying to find a rebuild kit for the fuel pump. It's '77 or '78 & I believe the mercruiser part # for the pump is 86234A4. The Sierra part # is 18-7278. And as an after thought, can you safely replace the fuel pump with an inline electric pump on a boat...

    windshield for a tracker

Not sure if this is the right place for this or not but I've got a 1990 Tracker Pro 17 deep V & I need a windshield for it. Any ideas where a guy might could find one? It's got a small console on the right side of the boat with a small little windshield that's only maybe about 14-15" wide or so...

    Primer Solenoid

My 90 model 60 horse has a primer solenoid & not a butterfly choke. My question is this, when you push the key to activate the primer does it just squirt fuel one time or will it squirt continuously as long as the key is held in?

    relocated tell tale

I just replaced the water pump & thermostat & relocated the tell tale to the top of the head on my 90 60 hp Johnson. In the water pump kit was information on moving the tell tale & it had a couple parts for that job if one was doing it. The fitting in my cowling that the hose hooked up to was...

    max RPM

Is there someplace I can find out what the max RPM for my motor is? It's a 1990 60 hp 3 cyl Johnson on a 17' tracker alum. deep V. I remember when I ran it last year the speedometer on the boat read right at 25 but I dont remember what tachometer read. It has a 13.25 x 17 prop on it & the guy...

    Overheat warning

I've got a 1990 Tracker Pro 17 deep V with a 60 hp Johnson that I just serviced the water pump on as well as relocated the tell tale to the top of the head & replaced T-stat & the head gasket. There is no warning buzzer that I can locate anywhere. I would rather have a visual warning than a...

'90 60 hp johnson head gasket?

I've changed a ton of head gaskets in my time but this is my first outboard. Does it matter which side goes which way on this motor? It's a 1990 60 hp Johnson 3 cyl. & there are no markings on the gasket other than the part # 329836 stamped on one side & it is identical from one side to the...
