    1984 50hp won’t idle without primer

I have a 6 H.P. kicker motor for which I purchased an unbranded carb rebuild kit. I think it was about $15. I put it in and had nothing but problems after the first use on the lake. Took the carb off again, and found that the gaskets inside the carb were distorted and looked like they were...

    1970s Evinrude Starflite 85hp

Best way to determine that there is no water in the lower unit is to drain the oil from the gear case. If it is milky colored, it has water in it. Put fresh new oil in the gear case after you drain it, and if the old oil had water in it, do not run the motor again until you fix the leak...

    1972 6hp Evinrude Idle Issue

I'm not a mechanic by no means, but when mine starts, it revs a bit too before I get to the throttle as quick as I want to, but by the amount of smoke I get when it first starts, I really am not worried about the pistons for the two seconds of over revving it when it starts. I think the smoke...

    1972 6hp Evinrude Idle Issue

Does it start on "fast" within one or two pulls for you? If so, I would live with it. That's how mine starts good too, usually on the first pull but sometimes on the second or even a third pull. The only thing I may add is that when mine starts, I "quickly" grab the throttle control arm and...

    Nothing on key turn

This may sound simple and stupid, but.........My boat was doing the same thing once. I tried and tested everything and no dice. By mistake, I found the tether off of my kill switch lying on the floor of the boat between the seat and sidewall of the boat. I never even thought about that...

    winter storage

I would not drain the gearcase and leave it empty for the winter because I would worry about rust in there if you do not fill it with the gear lube. Even if you want the better lube, at least fill it with some cheap stuff from Wallmart (hight tech gear oil) for the winter then drain it again...

    1970 60073D shutdown

I had one of the electric switch motors. My switches went and I was going to use toggle bolts on it. When someone pointed out the fact that if I were to hit the toggle bolt to throw it into reverse unexpectantly with my arm or something while going full speed ahead, it could kill me. I...

    winter storage

I do exactly as dingbat suggested. I put a full charge on my batteries before I put them to bed for the winter, stored in a garage. In the spring of the year, the batteries always still have a great charge on the enough to start the motor with no problem. The one thing I think is a "must...

    Decarb

I use Seafoam religously all season long in my motors. I probably do not really need to decarb in the fall, you are correct. I do, however, still decarb because I just feel it is cheap insurance that the motors will start and run next season with no problems. I might be wasting time and...

    Decarb

That is the way I do mine every year for the last 40 years, and I never had a problem in the spring when it's time to start the motors up. I always, ALWAYS change the lower end gear lube before winter so if there is water in there, I will remove it before it freezes. (I learned the hard...

Drops of gear oil Johnson 70 TLESB

If the gear oil is getting out, most likely there is water getting in. Cheap investment to drain the existing oil out of the gear case and see if there is water in it or not. Good starting point.

    Should I purchase a 60HP 1969 Johnson hydro-electric shift outboard motor?

I had an electric shift motor a few years back. The only problem that I had with it was the buttons that I had to push down to switch the gears. I had one heck of a time finding a set of the shift buttons as they are not available around me at all. I live in Michigan, and I ended up buying a...

    Charging issue?

Isn't this already in the Evinrude section? I thought that I was reading the Evinrude section when I came across this post.

1976 Evinrude 70hp Model#70673 - Broken Head off PIN, SHIFT LEVER TO SHIFT ROD

If you can get to the shift connector, try to cut the bolt (between the brass connector) then try to spred the connector open enough to get the connector off, or cut the connector itself to get it off then just purchse a new connector & bolt. Might be able to get to it with a small Dremmel tool.

Evinrude 1984 25hp not pumping water

You cannot hook up the usual muffs to this motor to run it on a water hose instead of a bucket. There is a special type water hookup doohickie made for this style of water pickup. I think it would still be available.

1990 Johnson GT150 wont turn over

There is such of thing out there as an electronics contact cleaner in a spray can. I would try that to make sure the contacts are very clean. Sounds like you found your issue anyway.

    No spark, desperate!

Try bypassing your kill switch. That may be the culprit not allowing a spark.
