1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Got my 10 spacers drilled, dressed and riveted in on the ribs without braces last night. So glad Watermann recommended the air riveter. I'd still be putting rivets in the gunwales now if I was still using my old hand tool. Had some spare time at work today, so brought the old helm along to...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Cut and finished off any sharp protruding areas on some of the old side brackets with the multi-tool. Pulled the decking back out after marking it up for where I need to make some mods for the new wood, then finally finished cutting and sculpting the foam. Now I just need to pull it and glue...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Glad I kept the old decking to cut up and lay out the way I'm planning on doing the new. With the mods even the old deteriorating 1/2" feels solid under foot, so the new 5/8" should be great. The Admiral and I tossed the pros and cons of keeping the forward raised deck design and decided to do...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Spent 2-1/2 hours tonight cutting and fitting foam. It's painstakingly slow especially fitting in the rib areas. Re-purposed my 1" belt sander as a strop to keep the blade sharp.

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Got the inner trim piece aligned so I could drill the holes for it now rather than after it's painted. After that I just worked on cutting some of the flotation foam. I hate to admit it, but I was moving rather slowly all afternoon after arriving home from picking everything up. Lost my grip...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Picked up transom cap, deck wood and Foamular this morning. The cap had been cracked to the point there was less that 1/2" material holding it together. Had to get the old paint off the cap and do some dressing and straightening, but it fits as good as a 41 year old cap can. Question - it was...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Rained most of yesterday and on and off today. It was dark and dreary when I got home from work today, so kept wheeling the boat out of the carport between sprinkles to get more light and room to work. All the straightening I did paid off and the gunwale sections went together almost perfectly...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Slow going tonight. After putting a final coat of Helmsman on the transom ends I turned my attention to the inner piece of the gunwale assembly. I started by working out the worst of the dents, dings and bends before cleaning up the old paint residue with the cup brush.. Darned thing tried to...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Thanks guys. Since I have to wait for the OT to thoroughly dry before top coating it, I decided to start cutting the new bow plate. As the old one was designed to have a considerable arch in the aft section, the only 2 holes that would line up the same were the forward ones. That became my...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Used just the belt sander to knock down the transom tonight. Starboard side was 1/4" high in front and port less than 1/8". Have them soaking up as much OT as they want now. What I thought was a new void, was actually a gap between the skin and board. Mixed up a small amount of epoxy with...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Had just enough time before and after the faire to get the bow and stern bolts and screws in. I hadn't noticed it before, but looks like I'll have to cut, sand and reseal the top corner of the transom on the starboard side before I'll be able to re-assemble the gunnels. I really hate making...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Worked my tail off after work today - that is except for the 2 trips I had to make back to work to pick up things I needed. Luckily it only takes me 12 min to get there. Started by cup brushing all seams below the waterline and all associated rivets (first trip to grab more cub brushes when...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Got the rest of the braces drilled and mocked up, then vacuumed most of the drillings out. Set the new transom wood in and inserted all the new SS bolts to make sure everything lines up. I have several bolts that I'll have to cut before installing. Laid in the bow support pieces...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Package arrived today. Looking at the packaging, I think Speedy Metals lost money on this one. It's the sheet of aluminum for my new bow plate. $10 shipping charge - I think they spent more than that just protecting it.

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Thanks guys. Had some time at work today, so dragged out my small drill press and hand miter and made a few 1/8" spacers I'm going to try for raising the outer ends of the braces.

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Thanks zool Got two coats of Helmsman on one side and all edges of the wood parts tonight. I cheated a little so I'd be able to get 2 on faster and added a little Japan drier to the first coat. Tomorrow night I plan on flipping them to get the other side and at least one more coat on the...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

I feel pretty good on what I got done today. Started the morning off playing with spraying metal flake on some color samples I made a couple weeks ago so the Admiral could help decide what the final paint scheme would be. We decided the black would get too hot in the sun and the white was too...
