1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Perfect weather this afternoon for getting the OT applied to the bow and stern pieces, mid 70's, light breeze and low humidity. For every coat on a flat surface I put one or more on the edges. It's supposed to stay like this a few days with only a slight raise in temps so they should dry...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Was all caught up at work today, so I mixed up a small batch of epoxy with cabosil and filled every little void and crevice I could find on both transom boards as well as the screw holes where I used screws to hold the transom halves together.

A little bit more done tonight. I made a cardboard template and cut the support for the new aluminum bow plate I'll be making. Got most of the sanding and fitting done, but still not quite how I want it yet. Once I'm happy with it it will be time to fill a few voids with epoxy and mix up a...

Not boat related, just a proud father/grandfather. My eldest daughter held a party today to celebrate my granddaughters 21st birthday plus my eldest grandsons HS graduation and entry into the Marine Corps in 2 weeks. My youngest daughter and family came in from Michigan. My 8 year old...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Sanded the transom board down flush with the metal last night, the started fitting the transom outboard plate. I used a spade drill just deep enough from the inside so I will be able to use a spade to make countersinks from the outside for heads and washers.

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Rain finally quit today, so was able to set up the planer and get it down to where it fits properly. Got all the through holes drilled with the help of a Wellcraft Drill Guide. Amazingly all the holes lined up.

Thx Micky. It's ACX from Menards. Even finished both sides, it measures .765 so the total thickness of the transom ended up 1.531. Trying to fit it in a slot that measures as low as 1.508 (1.520 at the highest) doesn't work. I'll probably take about .035 to .040 off each side with the planer...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Had some hard rain the last 2 nights, so got nothing accomplished. Tonight was my last before heading out to Colorado for a 4 day visit. Was able to cut some of the wood, which will be fit, drilled and sanded before they get the OT treatment. Unfortunately, the transom board is too thick for...

Just acquired a 170 Horizon. Assembly required.

I'd build the gantry - but then I already did, and so glad I took the time to do it. Really looking great. PS around here, this is what we call a cherry picker. Had me confused for a bit.

Thank you. Yep - 69 great years. Got the new boards cut slightly oversized for the transom. Glued, screwed and clamped to be cut out after it dries. Used Titebond III with a 1/8" V trowel on one side and a skim coat on the other to insure a good bond. I'll worry later if I put a screw where a...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Lake Michigan is still giving us some reprieve today, only 78 here and 90 just west of us. Blew the hull and rib tubes out, sprayed everything down heavily with straight cleaning vinegar, plugged the drain hole, pressure washed the heck out of it, leveled it and filled with enough water to get a...

Had to experiment tonight with some Alumiweld a friend gave me to try. I did the first 3 holes with it and was very pleased with how they came out. Pluses for the Alumiweld: 1) looks better if I was leaving it bare 2) stronger Minuses: 1) takes forever to get the aluminum up to temperature 2)...

Sanded the first 5 holes tonight, then prepped the gunnel tops for plugging. I counted 25 unwanted holes in one panel alone, so I have a lot of plugging and sanding to do. Mocked it up with the Clecos to look at the fit.

    Newbie Rebuild" 1988 Bluefin Sportsman 1900 w/ 100HP Merc

My Sylvan has the exact same setup. Originally it just had 2 pieces of 1x6 attached for support, so was going to copy that. Your design makes it so much better.

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Can't seem to get much more than an hour each night this weak before I'm fatigued. I did manage to finish getting every last spec of residual paint off the starboard last night with the cup brush and started on the port. Once I finish that, my plan is: Remove a few more dents and dings I...

What a difference finding the right stripper makes. The aircraft stripper bubbles the paint in less than 5 minutes and does more with one application than the others I tried did in 4. Port side and bow area are stripped. My body told me to take a break.

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

My biggest concern is having any gap where crap and crud can accumulate - was just hoping to alleviate that. Felt a little better today after work, so put a few hours into removing the old crappy paint from the transom then started on the starboard. As I knew there was absolutely no primer...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

This is driving me crazy, coming home to decent weather and not wanting to do irritate my ribs any more than I already do just moving or breathing. Planning ahead, I've been pondering what to use to seal the gap between the decking and the sides of the hull? I would like a tight seal like you...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

I decided I was not going to pressure wash again without better drainage, so spent what daylight I had to drill 50 5/16" weep holes. Half way through I dumped a bucket of water in and watched smiling as it took about 10 minutes to drain what would have taken a week before. With all I need to...
