1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Got the carb pulled yesterday and found out I'll need to replace the old original cork float, and reorder the correct rebuild kit. Got the 7042 instead of the 7024. Senior moments suck.

    40EL75 Rebirth

Finally had time yesterday to pull the carb for a rebuild. Found what I was afraid of - the old original cork float rather gasoline soaked, so I ordered a new float. Didn't look too bad other than that, but will do the laquer thinner soak and clean it up all pretty while I wait. Also...

To rescue or not to rescue

Battling with myself (haven't even mentioned it to the Admiral yet). I keep passing a 1978 Monark McFast SF with a Mariner 115 tower of power of the same year just 3 blocks away from me. Motor is in great condition and runs good. Steering cable is frozen, so most likely needs replacing. No...

I thought it was a tinny but now I'm not sure

Reminds me a lot of the one used by Shelby on Axe Men - that was a custom built boat

    40EL75 Rebirth

Pulled the head this afternoon. Pistons have light carbon coating, but nothing bad. Cylinder walls look great. Cleaned the head and water chamber ( found a lot of sand in the water chamber). Cleaned all bolts, replaced gaskets and reassembled. Admiral wanted to get her car in the garage when...

    40EL75 Rebirth

Before I spend too much on parts, I was hoping to get a compression reading on the cylinders. I replaced a bad neutral safety switch, but found the solenoid to also fail testing. I first tried to compression test by using a rope to manually crank the engine, but this old fart can't pull fast...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

This is why I decided to replace the wood in the transom. No signs of deterioration, but those cracks are about 1/2" deep and probably wouldn't last long. PS: Weatherman lied - never got over 29 degrees F here today

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Thank you Watermann. After pulling the transom and controls, I had second thoughts myself and covered it up alongside the Ouachita and the Appleby

I'll be using the same switch for my '75 Johnson 40. I drew this up for it:

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Used my engine hoist to pull the motor off the Sylvan this afternoon to get it on one of the stands I made last week. I figured 4 800lb capacity chains and 3 1500lb capacity links gave me enough safety rating for a 150lb motor

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

On the expressway on my way home with the boat, the transom saver cradle end broke (what was left is shown in the picture). I stopped and bungied the motor down and prayed the road was smooth enough so the skeg wouldn't get damaged hitting the road the rest of the way. Good thing the trailer...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Was afraid you'd say that Mike. I ordered one yesterday. I did finish my two new outboard stands. I made the one on the right a foot wider to accommodate both my 7.5hp and my 15hp. They were very crowded on my old stand I was given for the 5hp. The other one will be for the Johnson 40. I...

    Your boats winter pictures?

The Ouachita and the Appleby are ready. Still want to do some things on the Sylvan before it joins them for the winter.

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Cold and raining this morning, but drove up to Milwaukee to pick up the Sylvan. Put new wheels/tires on the trailer and a complete new wiring/light kit before I could trek it home. Luckily I took some good bungee cords along. Shortly after getting on the Interstate, the head of the transom...

Opinions Please 1969 Ouachita Convincer 14

With temps in the 30's and 40's for the near future, so when it stopped raining for a while I decided to take it out of the carport and cover it for the winter. My Appleby jon boat will wait until it drys out before I cover it. Right now, the rain is washing the blood out of it. On my way...

Opinions Please 1969 Ouachita Convincer 14

Not much new to report - very little daylight left after work last week and spent too much time on other things today (like buying another project boat). Did manage to get the rest of the original fiberglass floor edges cut away to clean up the rough edges and remove some additional foam...

1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

Decided i didn't have enough going with the Ouachita Convincer project lol so I went and looked at another boat this afternoon. Talked the guy down since it's going to need new decks, foam, carpet, paint, trailer lights and tires etc. But for the boat, trailer, 40hp Johnson, 36lb electric bow...
