    Proper plumbing of bilge pump?

On my to-do-list I need to install and plumb the bilge pump. Have an 1100 GPH pump with 1 1/8" outlet hose size. Have the 1 1/8" discharge fitting already installed on the starboard side gunnel about 4" below the rub strip. What is the right way to route the hose between the pump and the...

    Bow eye too small

Setting up the new winch and mast/bow stop assy. The winch has a strap with forged hook w/safety snap. When I connect the hook to the bow eye, there is no room left in the eye to connect any kind of safety chain. Suggestion ? The existing eye has an ID of 1", can I buy bigger eyes?

Getting ready to finish up the boat and need to install a transom mounted transducer and speed wheel. This is a 39 yr old boat with a pristine transom and I don't want to drill any water leaks, I mean holes . Have heard of mounting a board of some sort to the transom then screwing...

    Bimini, mooring cover or ????

Trying to decide how to best spend the little money I have on a cover for the boat. The boat is a 16ft deep V fiberglass runabout with an 80hp outboard. Bought the boat last summer but the cover that came with it was in very poor shape. It is/was what I would call a convertible cover, the kind...

Dumb question - winch strap from top or bottom of drum?

So here is my dilemma. I'm in the process of designing a new winch mast/bow stop and wondered if it really matters if the strap unwinds from the top or bottom of the winch drum. I have it worked out well if the strap comes off the bottom of the drum but can't come up with an approach that works...

Lounge seat install - question about carpeting

Went out and got 2 new back-back lounge seats for the boat. The seat frames and base are constructed from plastic instead of wood, meaning they will not rot. In the fall I installed new carpeting in the boat. It is a very low pile indoor/outdoor carpet. I was wondering if I should bother...

    GM makes the announcement

Just heard on the news what GM plans for its restructuring. Closing 5 more factories, dropping or selling off the Saturn line of vehicles and laying off 47,000 by years end. Those are huge numbers and the impact will be wide spread to be sure. Waiting now to see the affect this will have on...

Need to make a winch stand/bow stop.

Need to start thinking about finishing off the trailer. A new to me rig last summer that I'm in the middle of refurbishing. Winter got in the way before I could finish it. The old winch stand looked like it came off a sherman tank but was too short for the boat and the winch was badly rusted so...

So I've Decided to rebuild 1971 Merc 800

So, I've decided to go ahead and rebuild the old Merc. I have one running on a boat and two other identical motors in various stages of disassembly. I figure, with all those parts I should be able to put together an "almost new" motor for under $1000. Thanks to Laddies, Faztbullet and sschefer...

This CAN'T be good - piston damage

This is a parts motor I acquired for the tilt/trim system. I did a compression test and found 155-165 PSI on #1,2,4 and 0 PSI on #3. Tore the motor apart and found this (see photos). What would cause such destruction? In one of the photos you can see the inside of two of the cyls. You can see...

Proud Moment along Highway Of Heros

Traveled along what has been renamed the "Highway of Heros" yesterday which happened to coincide with the arrival home of three Canadian soldiers that were recently killed overseas. The highway is the route that is taken to bring the fallen soldiers, by way of motorcade, to Toronto from CFB...

Help with piston ring PN application

Looking at buying a set of rings (39-50587A 12) for a 1971 Merc 800. I have two of these motors torn apart and will be rebuilding to make one out of the two. Both motors have 3 rings per piston. All the parts sites I checked show only 2 rings per piston. The PN above is apparently for the 800 GS...

How to Load a Boat onto a Pickup in ten easy steps

THIS WAS IN STUPID HUMAN TRICKS, BUT THOUGHT IT WAS BETTER HERE. TD 1. Load up beer, 2-3 ice chests full should do. 2. Relax, have beer, that was hard work. 3. Hook boat trailer up to truck. 4. Drink lots of beer. 5. Ignore safety chains, they take too much time to connect. 6. Drive real...

Was working on the boat Sunday in a t-shirt. Today the rain turned to snow around 10am and hasn't stopped since. Everything is covered in about 1" of heavy wet snow. Fortunately it won't last long because the forecast for tomorrow is sunny and 50F. Won't be long though before its here to...

Winterizing question - speedo lines & water pressure lines

Should I do anything with the various lines that contain small amounts of water when storing for the winter. Temps here can get to -20C. Concerned about the speedo line and the water pressure gauge from the motor. What is usually done with these?

Splash well too narrow for steering rod

Replaced a 40yr old rotary steering system with a newer teleflex rotary system. The cable from the old system attached to a transom bracket and the end of the cable connected directly to an arm mounted on the front of the motor (Merc 80HP) and did not use the tilt tube. In the new system, the...
