Have a 1971 vintage PTT that I will be installing. The pump unit has a mounting bracket on what I think is the side of the unit. I have searched for installation instructions with no luck. How important is it to keep the unit vertical? Where and how were these pump units typically mounted...

Help me decide - do I NEED to paint the hull?

This is a little long but please bear with me. A little history and background. 1970 15ft fiberglass boat that has been stored in a garage since 1987. The are many little blisters covering what would be the wet surface of the hull if it was in the water. The blisters are small, up to about 1/8"...

Can I do it? Don't see a way of getting the signal wire thru the existing harness. Found a threaded port on the water jacket cover between #2 and #3 cylinders. Currently has s plug installed. Is this the right place to install the sending unit?

Want to install a tach for the above 4 cyl motor. Sticker on engine cowling says to "use only the tachometer specified for this ignition system" or something to that effect. What should I be looking for? Can I use any of the current marine tachs (Faria, Teleflex, Quicksilver etc)? Thanks

    Possible Submerged Motor ??

Here is my concern. I bought a used motor on which the started motor was non-operational. I bought it non-running as-is. The motor is a 1970 Merc 800 that looks in amazing (flawless) condition. Owner promises the motor runs perfectly, was meticulously taken care of and has had very limited use...

Compression results - what do you say?

This motor looks impeccable and was told it had low hours. Starter motor was non operational so I bought it as-is non running but the owner promises the motor runs great without problems. So, I replace the starter and do a compression test. Did not try to start the motor yet. Here are the...

Photos are in - prognosis on 1970 80HP Merc

I think the photos tell the story but I'm hoping for a glimmer of hope from someone. Motor has sucked in water by the lower crank seals many years ago. Owner retired the motor then and it has sat ever since. Photos show conrod end caps (L-R cyl 1-4), crank journal 4, crank journal 3 and a shot...

1970 Merc 800 lower crankshaft bearing removal

Doing a quick tear down to see if its worth rebuilding motor after water got into bottom cyl. Got everything apart so far except for the lower bearing on the crankshaft. The bearing itself is shot and seems to be seized onto the crank. Tried heating the bearing and penetrating oil with no luck...

    Tilt Trim Compatibility 1970 80hp

What years and or HP models of power trim units will work with a 1970 80HP ? I've got PTT on my 40 Mariner and now I'm spoiled. If I rebuild the 80hp Merc, I'll be wanting PTT on it as well but don't have the money to buy new. I'm looking for a used unit of some sort.
