yamaha 2hp 2-stroke idles fine but dies at higher revs

Thanks, mike-i. I didn't find a fuel filter, or a primer bulb. The engine dies as soon as I increase the throttle. Gas cap has been loosened. I should change the fuel tap (on/off) directly under the tank. (It's very old, very stiff to move, but I don't know if this could cause the problem) Richard

yamaha 2hp 2-stroke idles fine but dies at higher revs

Hello. I just bought a used Yamaha 2hp 2-stroke engine. Took it out and it idles fine, but dies when I try and increase speed. Starts up again after a few minutes, then the same thing. Checked the spark plug once and it was wet and black. Using 50:1 fuel oil mix as the previous owner recommended.

    1996 Johnson 50 hp 2-stroke carbs

Got something like JB Weld arriving tomorrow. In truth, it was a bad operator using the extractor that caused the problem. My bad. Now working on a solution.

    1996 Johnson 50 hp 2-stroke carbs

The motor wasn't starting, although it was turning over. Spark was present, compression on both cylinders about 150psi. Cleaned both carbs, but on replacing, I found a fractured fuel nipple on the upper carb, which broke completely on examination. Using a bolt extractor, I removed the remainder...

    1996 Johnson 50 hp 2-stroke carbs

Hi, what's the difference between the upper and lower carburettors on the above engine? Is there a way of identifying which one is which when they're taken off the engine? I'm playing with a carb I took off, I am fairly sure it is part no. 435910, and has a number stamped on the body, 339169 D2...

    I want to add a 2nd killswitch to my 1996 Johnson 50

I found the black/yellow wire diconnected just before the power pack. It's probably been that way for years. Now reconnected; BUT my ignition switch has gone bad (no continuity between the two M terminals when there should be). This is my 3rd ignition switch in 3 years- could that broken wire...

    I want to add a 2nd killswitch to my 1996 Johnson 50

I'll look at those connections, black to ground, black/yellow to powerpack. ( I know I'm not too clever, where and how to connect to powerpack) I have a feeling I previously connected the black/yellow to ground on the engine.

    I want to add a 2nd killswitch to my 1996 Johnson 50

Hello again. Engine started and ran, but won't switch off using killswitch or by turning ignition key to off. This is despite installing a new wiring harness recently. While I try and sort that out, can I add a 2nd kill switch, to allow me to use the boat? I did have one installed a few years...

    Problem starting johnson 50hp 1996

Took off the flywheel, and yes, the key was sheared. Replaced with a factory key, replaced the flywheel, tightened the nut as tight as I could. I'll try and start up the engine tomorrow.

    Problem starting johnson 50hp 1996

Thanks for your replies. Racerone, I still haven't checked the flywheel key this time around. Maybe that's the most fundamental check. Must get hold of a flywheel puller , again. Update; tried starting when spraying in easy start. Some success, fired up shortly, a few times, but I noticed a...

    Problem starting johnson 50hp 1996

I have had a problem starting the above engine- not starting at all at the moment. Turns over well, compression good, spark is present. Checked spark plugs after trying to start- they are soaked with fuel. Small leak noted at primer valve. Could a faulty primer valve/ primer solenoid cause a non...

    Johnson 50hp 1996 2cyl, 2stroke revved out of control.

Thanks for your replies. Done a few things; checked compression-150 on both cylinders; found a lot of things to tighten/reconnect on carbs and fuel lines. Will attach water hoses and muffs and then start her up.

    Johnson 50hp 1996 2cyl, 2stroke revved out of control.

Checked a few things; flywheel key O.K., throttle plates open and close, cables all look good. Compression test next week. Refitting carbs, checking for loose screws etc.

    Johnson 50hp 1996 2cyl, 2stroke revved out of control.

My engine, above, has not started properly in its recent history. I thought cylinders were flooding. Refurbished the carburettors, replaced a damaged fuel line (from the VRO fuel pump to the primer solenoid). Today, on a hose and muffs, it started, no choke, open throttle. But it very soon...

Johnson 50hp 1996 won't switch off at key switch.

Hello all. I recently posted about a non starting outboard. Followed your advice, found a disconnected power cable, and a broken neutral switch. I also replaced the key switch. Now , I can start the engine, have it running for as long as I like, but removing the kill switch does not stop the...

    Johnson 50hp Not cranking normally

Hello All, This has probably been covered many times, but.... I had my Johnson 1996 50 hp cranking and starting O.K., then it suddenly wouldn't. Key turned to start, absolutely nothing, no click from solenoid. Battery is well charged, and I can get it to crank when I connect, at the solenoid...

Johnson 50 hp 1996 ran well then died.

Thanks for your advice. I have taken off the carburettors and will clean as well as I can. Can someone tell me what the primer lines to the carburettor do, and how do I check that that system is working? Pumps water well, so I don't think anything wrong with water pump, will check compression...
