    I would never install an aftermarket ( paper thin ) gasket for this V-4 / V-6 application.

    Bin working on outboards since 1968 or so.-----But , find a gray haired / caring mechanic in your area to help you with this.----Not many of those guys left I think.

    Remove sparkplugs.----Rig up a way to measure torque to turn flywheel.-----Record results.-----Remove lower unit and repeat the test.

    Is the felt wiper too tight ----Remove the breaker cam and test again.

    Did you have the armature plate off?----Have never experienced that over many years / motors !----Side note.---Those U-shaped clips are not installed correctly on breaker points.

    Perhaps one of the coils is rubbing on the flywheel.---Remember we can not see your motor.

    Don't spend any $$$ until you have determined the actual condition of the motor.

    With the right tools the flywheel is off in minutes.-----You have to do it or pay $100 / hr for a shop to help you.

    If a motor is in good condition it idles SMOOTH.----When put in gear it will drop about 150 / 200 RPM and idle smooth all day long.----If it stalls a lot something is wrong.----Simple trouble shooting will find the issues.

    Proper tooth contact is determined with Prussian blue / experience / time / effort.-----Very important for long gear life.

    Post some ( 5 or 6 ) of the powerhead.----The 100 HP version was marketed in 79 / 80.-----Then again from 88 to 94.----And it could be that the later midsection was put on an older motor.----Or an older lower unit put on a newer motor.-----This is what happens with numerous owners !
