    1974 Chieftain 25 "Adventurer" Restoration

Plywood, 3 rolls of neoprene rubber for the fuel tank beds, scrap yard aluminum bin finds, and yet another $100 of hardware from the Depot. Thinking I'll really be able to do some damage with all this stuff. I'm going with 1/2" (15/32) plywood for the cabin floor and 5/8" (19/32) for the cockpit...

Doin the Sky Jacker 6" lift kit for helm. You can see where I have been fighting the rain. Sun pops out, put paint on, sky instantly turns grey, rain washes paint off. Slowly but surely.

Starcraft Chieftain 25 vs islander 22

Here are a few snips from old Starcraft catalogs that show deck layout and some size comparisons. You can really see the difference in cockpit to cabin proportions in the one where it compares the Islander and Chieftain of same length.

Starcraft Chieftain 25 vs islander 22

So here's what I've got from measuring the 25: --Cabin-- Width -to windows 75.5" (6' 3.5") -to hull sides 90" (7' 6") Length -cabin wall to windshield 111" (9' 3") -cabin wall to front of v-berth 159" (13 '3") Height factory setup 67" (5' 7") *Height from floor to between ceiling beams 70" (5'...

Starcraft Chieftain 25 vs islander 22

Hey you know what, that's a really great question and I am interested to know too! I have a Chief 25 that I am rebuilding so I can take any measurements needed for this comparison. I'll go out in a bit and take a measurement of the cockpit length and width as well as cabin. I bet even the...

    1974 Chieftain 25 "Adventurer" Restoration

Below you can see where the rear beams were intruding on the space and trimmed slightly so tanks could go back another couple inches. Planning to mount water tank sideways like this so it fits and just reconfigure the ports. Old drain will become vent, old vent will be supply #1, original...

    1974 Chieftain 25 "Adventurer" Restoration

Removed inner gunwale extrusions. The material from them will likely be repurposed later for something else on the boat.

    1974 Chieftain 25 "Adventurer" Restoration

So originally I was just going to notch the plywood for the tank beds but because of the increased water tank size I needed the fuel tanks to be a couple inches farther back. That corner being the one that got me has nothing to do with this I swear.

    1974 Chieftain 25 "Adventurer" Restoration

Update: Painted 2x10's, reinstalled aft floor Z-beam supports, tested deck height with a piece of plywood by helm. Thinking I will need to raise steering wheel a bit later on. Word of warning- the aluminum deck supports are extra SHARP! Be careful when rebuilding the floors so you don't get...

    1991 mercury 115hp 2 stroke gauges?

That battery monitor sounds like a good idea. I have a voltmeter but I don't have anything that shows the actual current draw on the system. Might have to add one of those myself. Glad you kept the cool old speedometer, always liked the old school style gauges best. What's the other box bottom...

    1991 mercury 115hp 2 stroke gauges?

Nice work on the new helm, looks like it's really coming together. I like the look of the plotter being recessed into it like that. What's the display under the Lowrance? Standalone depth sounder?

Decided to replace a bunch of the loose old rivets on the main runners. Replaced each double with a triple for a little extra strength. Old fashions definitely help rivets seat properly, pro tip lol

    1974 Chieftain 25 "Adventurer" Restoration

That's right on! It'd be better to have these douglas fir beams rot out in however many years than have the salt copper pressure treated wood slowly but surely self destruct the hull! It really is a shame that all the people-huggers just had to "improve" pressure treated wood. The good old...

    1974 Chieftain 25 "Adventurer" Restoration

Thanks, and you're definitely right. I am planning to paint it as I go along, just not yet. Hoping to get it mostly cut and fit together then paint as much as I can. Mold definitely sucks big time so probably will use some Kilz or something on it in subfloor areas. Hoping to rig up some kind of...

    1974 Chieftain 25 "Adventurer" Restoration

And finally- the build begins. Decided to go with 2x10's as a cheap simple solution to quickly and securely raise cockpit deck height while also boxing in the mammoth tanks. This layout will have the tanks nice and low on hull for stability. Putting in a 2' by about 5' piece of 3/4 down each...

    1974 Chieftain 25 "Adventurer" Restoration

While all the ceiling is out I took some pictures of how the windshield appears to be attached by a row of rivets for its leading two edges and a single stainless screw through the aluminum at each rear corner. Not sure if the rivets hold the actual windshield frame itself down or maybe a track...

Rough test fitting of the new flotation blocks. Each is 1.5 cu ft or about 90lbs buoyancy, have 32 so far. Positioned 10 of the rear blocks around engine to try to directly counteract the approx 900lb Mercruiser, the rest I think should be higher, just above original deck height but a foot...
