    1992 150hp XR6 gauge setup

Temp switches close and ground when temp gets too high. So if you want to wire in lights and a buzzer, connect power from the ign switch(used for gauges) to one side of the lights/buzzer, and connect the other side to the temp switch on the head. When the temp switch grounds the light/busser...

    1992 150hp XR6 gauge setup

On a supporting note. Water temp gauges are real good for automotive applications, where the circulation is clean coolant. OB's can suck in sand, muck, plastic bags and the like. This means, that the water pressure drops, before the temp gauge knows this. What you see the OB goes from fine...

'99 Mercury 50HP ELHPTO: carburetor idle screw adjustment procedure

In the past Merc idle adjustments have been a compromise between idle quality and acceleration. That is when the carbs were set for best idle, the motors would not accelerate smoothly. This is because of design and the lack of accelerator pumps on the carbs. If your motor does not have the...

    Dragging caliper away from home

Gee, This is pretty late, but, it can help someone else. Brake components are tough iron. You can hit them with a hammer and not damage them, mostly. Crack the bleeder and shove a big screwdriver into the pad/rotor space and tap it with a hammer. Rotors are pretty cheap and pads are also...

    Flat tire on haul-out today . . .

Your post reminded me to check the tire pressure on my two trailers., as it approaches time to pull 'em. The speedboat trailer had 50PSI and called for 80PSI. I filled it. The 21 footer tandem trailer was fine at near 50PSI. I also was inspired to spray the rusty parts of the trailer with...

    Switching mercruiser throttle controls

I would expect the new controls to work mechanically. There should be a listing of compatibility, but if the OD is Alpha, and the new control fits Alpha, I would expect it to work. The electrical connections could be a bit different.

making your own gaskets / seals

All the leaks in the waterpump base I have ever had were from the driveshaft seal. The base gasket and Oring did not leak, as far as I could tell. My V6 Merc has needed two shift shaft seals in the last decade.

Are these old D!ck Pope Water Skis any good?

I just tossed out a pair of pope skis a month ago. They were fine, even with the orig bindings (heavy vinyl I think). I could not give them away. They were fine to ski on, as the flat bottom of the ski gave good action on two skis. I also tossed out a "Banana" slalom ski. it had a concave...

    1992 150hp XR6 gauge setup

Your trim gauge sender wiring must be wired up thru the transom clamp. The way it is now will likely cause it to be physically damaged by the water. I never saw a water pressure gauge sender like that. It sure looks like a water temp gauge. A lot of Merc V6 motors had an overheat switch on...

    Prop problem

Remember the internet is still insisting that perpetual motion machines are real. They want the clicks, likes and subscribes, for the $$. Actually, I think you can find most any alternate fact on the internet, without looking too hard. (BTW- alternate facts are lies.)

    No Spark after Stator Replacement

Bad rectifiers can cause spark issues. Disconnect the rectifier AC leads, insulate them and then retest DVA voltage.

    End of Season oil changes?

Gee, checking the gearcase for water infiltration at haul out, is just a bit less work than changing the gear oil at that time. At least IMO. I just change it.

making your own gaskets / seals

Make sure the Oring under the pump base fits properly. I think most of the sealing occurs there.

    Barefoot skiers?

John, on an unrelated note. We always used ski belts, mostly because jacket - style life preservers were not widely available, and the belts satisfied the regulation. On one skiing trip about 50 years ago, a high school friend of mine, skied in her bright orange bikini, with it's 4 fabric...

    Mercury 2-Stroke Oils

DFI motors inject oil into the crankcase, via an oil pump. Air only is drawn in to the crankcase by the piston movement, as is usual for a 2 cycle engine. A V6 Optimax OB, for example, has 7 oil injection points. One for each cylinder, plus one for the air compressor. Since the DFI oil is...

What is this wire hanger called and where can find a replacement?

Those style hooks are pretty widely avail, in different sizes. It is likely Amazon will have some.

    Modern PT lumber

The pilings that Venice is built on were whatever was available in Europe at the time. They were a mix of soft and hard wood. They were driven a foot apart or less, and were of different diameters and lengths. The key was to drive them to the water level, and top them with waterproof...

    Modern PT lumber

Cedar is very rot resistant, and superior to pine in several ways. If PT pine was not a lot cheaper that cedar, it would not be used, IMO. As for Chestnut, I do not know how long it resists rot, if it is used for a deck, but if used for the walls of a roofed barn, I am pretty sure it will last...

    Modern PT lumber

Your barn has a roof, right? That keeps most of the water off the chestnut logs, helping them to last, although hardwood is more rot resistant. My neighbor built his deck with Mahagony. It looked like crap, but didn't rot, at least not yet.
