Lubricating starter motor shaft 5.0 MPI

Those of us in salt water MIGHT do that every so often, due to corrosion caused by salt air but even for me, unless there's a problem I leave it be... When I have done it I use a thick marine grease like Triple Guard or Lucas Marine

    Leak into bilge, bellows?

If your grease witness marks are uniform but you have to force it that much to get it on, I'm wondering if the gimble bearing isn't fully seated in the housing.

    Leak into bilge, bellows?

The problem with misalignment is the rubber damped coupler, it will put uneven forces on the coupler which will overheat and wear the rubber out and that will result in having to pull the engine. My boat is going on 37 years old, it is on the original coupler, the gimble bearing has been...

    Leak into bilge, bellows?

I can't remember which forum it was on, but a few years back, there was a guy who had a boat that could not be aligned, no matter what. Eventually what was found was that the boat was built wrong, the engine mounts were out of line with the outdrive opening, so the drive and engine had to be...

lifter issue and rock arm registration

When I did mine, I didn't take the lifters apart since they were working fine before I took the heads off (blown head gaskets, cracked cyl heads from a past overheat) and I inspected each one visually, and just put it back in the bore it came from. When I reassembled the engine it was about 4...

    Leak into bilge, bellows?

glad the crowfoot worked for you but I think it's still off. My engine was last aligned in....2004....I have not had to change it...since....the tool goes in very easily, no need to force it and I hope it stays like that What do the witness marks look like on the tool? Here's mine.....

    Leak into bilge, bellows?

Got it from Stumpy's Fab Works. Yes it does have height adjustment, makes it very easy. You know I have never had trouble getting the drive back on as long as I have the height correct and I use the screwdriver to turn the driveshaft to line up the splines. I don't have to force it, kick it none...

    Leak into bilge, bellows?

Don’t use grease for those Orings, motor oil only…that’s what it says in my OMC shop manual for the Cobra….

Rubberized or Epoxy undercarriage roll on for salt water trailer?

Agreed any rubberized coating will allow water to get underneath it. The only thing that might buy some time is coating it inside & out with something like Fluid Film. Here the only thing that lasts is galvanized or aluminum. I have a 1994 Load Rite that’s still solid. Any little spots I touch...

those are screw in rocker studs instead of the earlier pressed in rocker studs. look at his pix again, there is no shoulder under the rocker arms.

GM changed the rockers in later production, look back at the pix I posted, you can see that the rockers appear to have needle bearings. However, that is what Michigan Motors supplies in their reman engines, it's possible that the later style design can be used on the early engines that came with...

How many very new 4 stroke engines will be running trouble free at age 50 to 75 years old ?

Small block Chevrolets, Fords and Mopars are probably the best designed engines for long life and easy of repair, ever. I also love the AMC designed 4.0 liter six in older Jeeps, I have had one of those for 27 years....

And the rocker arms themselves are different, the ones you have are for the adjustable system.

And the reason why the small block Chevy will still be around? aftermarket support Just like I can still get any part I need for a 4 bbl Quadrajet even though it hasn't been produced in 30 years!

lifter issue and rock arm registration

This is right from my OMC shop manual and remember it’s a GM engine whether it’s Merc OMC or Volvo. For your adjustable valve train this is how it’s done and if it doesn’t seem right either the pushrods or lifters are wrong for the engine or something’s wrong with the lifters…and DON’T forget...
