Mercruiser 140 (1984) - What started as key no longer turning off boat has evolved into boat not starting at all

Yup. The conversions need 12v, which is what the red wire should be doing. The black is the trigger wire from the system, so grounds out the coil (-) and should be attached there like a points system.

Mercruiser 140 (1984) - What started as key no longer turning off boat has evolved into boat not starting at all

Kind of...still hard to tell what's going on. Your P/Grey wire is the P/Y I was talking about. Pertronix wire looks new, and is what's powering the ignition module. Yellow wire...not sure, but guessing that should be hot from the choke with the ignition on (and that terminal at the choke)...

Mercruiser 140 (1984) - What started as key no longer turning off boat has evolved into boat not starting at all

Ok. so not sure how your pertronix is wired. Originally though, when your key is in "start", a purple/yellow wire is energized from the starter, supplying 12v to the coil. When you let off the switch to "run", the ignition circuit takes over. With the points system, the coil is powered by a...

Mercruiser 140 (1984) - What started as key no longer turning off boat has evolved into boat not starting at all

Key off, are you getting 12v at the coil pos when engine off? Presumably you are with the engine on

Mercruiser 140 (1984) - What started as key no longer turning off boat has evolved into boat not starting at all

Since we don't know what you're working on, I'm going to say you have a bad TKS diode.

    . . . and I Thought Hi-tech Boat Engines Were Bad . . .

When I got my mini, I went through this. Low battery throws a ton of codes. Not only is the battery a PITA to replace, but you need to recode if you swap a different Ah battery, AGM for lead acid, etc. My last car ('02 330Ci) I bought with 135k miles and sold with 235k. Was mostly pretty...

Twin Merc V8 and different fuel usage

How hard to run each motor on a separate Jerry can? This would give you the most accurate info. How far off are they as a %?

Twin Merc V8 and different fuel usage

One or 2 tanks? Since that value is calculated, might be able to figure out actual burn between the motors by keeping track of miles traveled/gallons required to fill tank. Every car that I've owned has had an optimistic MPG display that doesn't correlate with actual mpg.

did you fix the voltage to the coil?

Bad engine coupler or spun prop hub?

I've had weeds wrapped around the prop that made it behave similarly. Shouldn't, but did.

    Am I just nuts???????

Cool, if you just want a way to waste some time then go for it. Flipping a boat for no profit that I have no intention of using doesn't make sense to me, but it's not my time. I've got a list of time-wasting projects to last me another 20 years. If I was going to do all the work though, might as...

2000 Regal 2100 LSR 5.0 No start after rebuild.

This first. Unless you retrofitted to a points system.

    Am I just nuts???????

...$5k worth of resto. If you feel like a project, buy something newer and transplant that into your current hull.

    Fuel delivery

He's got the pump on the bench...why not just hook 12v to it?

No Spark on 1988 4.3 ltr. engine

No, don't change the ignition coil. A bad ignition coil isn't why he's getting 10.4v at the ignition coil

    New boat with merc 5.7

That's a bit different though. I said initially; if it isn't starting and you're getting timing light flashes, I'll move to fuel. I wonder what a poor man's gap tester would be--old plug that you really widen the gap on? On my outboards/small engines I usually can't be bothered to find my gap...

    New boat with merc 5.7

I'm partial to a timing light initially. Doesn't tell you the quality of the spark, but if you're getting a steady flash you're likely dealing with fuel. Esp in an electronic ignition.

    Help prop an old boat?

Also, getting the trim sorted first is important. Your wot rpms will be low if you're plowing

    New boat with merc 5.7

A couple of teaspoons. Don't waste your time on additives. If you have water in your tank, it needs to be physically removed. Do you have a fuel water separator?

No Spark on 1988 4.3 ltr. engine

no, and no real reason to. the troubleshooting basically tests each component. each step that you reach ensures that all the prior components work. look up how to do a voltage drop test to determine where your wiring issues are. 10.4v at the coil sucks.
