    1970 Springbok speedometer

Those old speedos were nothing but a simple pressure gauge and can be tested by putting air pressure to the tube on the back of the gauge. It may not be broken but be just a clogged pickup or the hose is clogged or broken. Has he actually tested it? Won't cost you a cent if it is fixable.

    1970 Springbok speedometer

Is he restoring the boat to look original and is there a nonworking speedometer or a just a hole where one was? Or does he just want to add a speedometer to see how fast he is going?

    Are Adhesive Keel Guards Effective?

Yes I would recommend for your situation. I talked the powers above me to have one installed on the last patrol boat I operated. There were many times we would have to go to shore and could not pick the ideal spot It probably added several years to the life of the hull.

    1999 Caravelle VDO Speedometer

That signals the start of the computer game called finding a part for 20 year old electronic item. You are going to have to find the make and model as the transducers are not universal. A picture of the gauge along with any number and/or text printed on the side or back of the gauge might...

    1999 Caravelle VDO Speedometer

That was just one I picked up off the net to display. The one you would need depends on the make and model of your gauge. I would first check that the wheel on yours is free to spin. If it is I would next power the gauge and spin the wheel with a finger and check if the gauge show any thing...

    1999 Caravelle VDO Speedometer

I think your transducer would be similar to this. Notice the paddle wheel on the transducer that generates an electrical signal to the gauge.

    New boat

It is my desire to never sleep on a boat again. You can get a lot of bodies in a small space if you design it right.

    Correct spark part size

The 5ES is a hotter plug than the 6ES. There is always a chance that running a plug that the tip is hotter could cause detonation. Whether that could happen on your motor I have no idea but is always a good idea to run the plugs recommended.

3.5 hp Montgomery ward sea king running issue

Well, mea culpa. The sticker is calling for 16/1 ratio. The problem was probably not related to running 50/1 but either adjustments or dirty carb jets. I remember 60 years ago when I ran motors like that all the time it was an art akin to witchcraft to fine tune the fuel. Adjusting the...

3.5 hp Montgomery ward sea king running issue

Proper mix for that engine is 24/1 of air cooled oil (Chainsaw oil) not marine twc which is for water cooled outboards.

    Mercury 850

First get a spark tester. Even a cheap 4 dollar on like this will show if you are getting the same spark on top two vs bottom ones. Since it is the top two cylinders that are not firing what is common to them? One set of reed valves and one carb. I am not discounting water intrusion either...

    Mercury 850

If the change in plug wires makes no difference I would think about the top carburetor. Take the air silencer off and move the throttle back and forth and check that the linkages are moving the butterflys together and the chokes are moving together. If so maybe it is time to at least pull the...

    remove woodruff from tapered shaft?

A key on a tapered shaft is mostly for alignment purposes. The flywheel on an outboard must be aligned for timing purposes and it is assembeled dry and depends on the taper for resistance to turning. The exception is rotary lawn mower motors that use a straight flywheel shaft and a square...

    remove woodruff from tapered shaft?

I would not recommend grease on the shaft as now you are relying mostly on the Woodruff key for steering control. Tapers like a Morse taper on lathe tools depend on a dry fit to stop rotation. Feedback from striking an underwater object could shear the key and cause lack of steering control...

    Mercury 850

I was still typing I guess with raceone replied. Pay attention to his advice, he is much sharper on these motors than me.

    Mercury 850

I had a 76 850 for 25 years and I still have a file folder full of notes on what I had worked on and maintenance. I seem to remember that 75-76 was when the change ignition systems was. Does yours have a distributor? Was the spark checked with a gap tester and were all four about the same...

    Mercury 850

It would help if you could tell us what year the 850 is as the ignition systems are different depending on the year. A serial number or even a picture of the motor cowling would help. Do I understand correctly that you have spark on the bottom 2 plugs only and not the top 2?
