    What year or better yet, does it have a distributor and 4 cylinders? On the shift slider. Normally fwd is toward the front of the boat, and reverse is toward the back. Neutral is about in the middle of the shift slide track.

    Gee, that is a real lot of play. My neighbor had a fast (50mph) boat with a turn or more of play in the hydraulic steering. I am surprised I lived. I hope the new steering system fixes it.

    It has the older style starter, like my 1973 850. I did not see the old ugly orange coil, like the '73's had. Does it have the newer black square rectifier or the old rectangular rectifier, with the colored decals? You might check the block part numbers. That could narrow it down.

    Does the choke plate close when the engine is cold? It sounds like the accelerator pump is working, but you should verify. What do the spark plugs look like?

    Check compression and spark to make sure all cylinders are healthy. Is there a mixture screw on the carb? If so, can you richen it a bit and see if that helps? The 2 cycle Mercs need a bit of a rich idle mixture to accelerate, not sure about the 4 cycle Mercs.
