    I Got Me a Mercury !!!

I went back through all of the tests specified in the CDI literature. Here is my test results . . . See the values written in . . . . Everything looks good except the peak voltage from the stator (CDI calls it an alternator). I am only getting 110 - 140 volts . . . maybe some as high as 160...

    I Got Me a Mercury !!!

I have an oscilloscope, which should do the trick to read peak voltage.

    I Got Me a Mercury !!!

I need to see if I have a DVA . . . I'm only getting 20-25 volts from the stator using a DVM. I should be seeing 180v P-P from the stator.

    I Got Me a Mercury !!!

Also . . . CDI has a troubleshooting guide, which I have been referencing for testing. There is one more thing I can try . . .maybe it will will work

    I Got Me a Mercury !!!

OK, I'm not having any luck with the 1972 Mercury ignition (aka Phase Maker). I've replaced wiring, isolation blocks, tested the module, the coils . . . everything seems to be per spec (Referencing the write-up by Bill Mohat) . I am thinking that maybe I should just take the magneto...

Are there any Xenforo Web App Experts Among Us?

It seems like many of the Internet forums have migrated to 'Xenforo' software. Just wondering who all may have worked with it as part of their profession or otherwise?

    BMW headlight . . . $1,000 !!!

Quick update . . . In my search for a new headlight assembly, I came across some seemingly inexpensive replacements, but the fine print was that they did not have any of the 'modules'. As shown in post #25 above, new headlight assemblies with all the stuffing are about $2,700, some places were...

    Loosing Faith in Humanity . . .

I've only sold 2 items, but your point is well-taken. After all the fees and stuff, I'm only netting about 65% for my sales. I've learned a few things, so the number should go up. I'll just need to figure the net proceeds into my pricing. (I try to under-cut on popular items, figuring that...

    LiFePO Batteries ???

Quick update . . . While the system has been doing its charging thing while the boat lives on the mooring, I have noticed a few over voltage situations from the solar charging (via the DuoRacer controller). From what I can tell, the over voltages are brief, ( maybe a few seconds or less) and...

    Over voltage (again)

Quick update on the on-going saga . . . Electrical system 'happiness' has been hit or miss over the past month or so. My good friends on the Cruisers 338 owner's group (FB) said to check the battery isolator, based on their experience. My initial efforts were to just put the alternator and...

    Water in the Lower Unit

13 psi is plenty, if not too much . . . I'd change the gear lube, go boating and re-check in a month or 2 . . .

    I Got Me a Mercury !!!

After much testing and tinkering, I figured a few things out on the Evinrude. 1) The fuel line connection at the fuel connector was loose (not sufficiently clamped), which allowed air to get into the fuel line. A hose clamp did the trick. 2) The fuel connector at the engine also seems to...

    Can You Wear This Shirt

I had one of those things (Slide Rule) as a freshman in college . . . within a few years, it was all scientific calculators.

    I Got Me a Mercury !!!

I ran the Evinrude some more today (with oars in hand) . . . definitely a fuel starvation issue. I brought the motor back to the house to run it in the test tank. I replaced sections of fuel line with clear lines so I could see what is going on. Essentially, the fuel is draining back through...

    I Got Me a Mercury !!!

As for the Mercury . . . I came across a tidbit of info somewhere (can't quite recall) that these isolator blocks (basically non-conductive mounting studs for the maker points) can/do develop cracks which allow the spark to jump to the housing rather than the spark plug. . I'm not sure if that...

    I Got Me a Mercury !!!

Yes, I got my Johnson 4.5 HP sorted out a few years back, and I think this motor (Evinrude) will take the same. It did play a trick on me yesterday on the way out to the big boat. Crapped out from fuel starvation. Not sure what happened, but the fuel line lost its prime. It took some time to...

    I Got Me a Mercury !!!

Here is my handy work, saving about $100. These wires have threaded studs soldered on one end and the ring connector on the other. They connect the maker points to the the '-' side of the coils. . . I did not have the OEM brown & white color wiring, so red (brown) and yellow (white) will have...

    I Got Me a Mercury !!!

Quick update . . . The Evinrude is now on the dinghy as is working fine. Not as smooth a runner as the Mercury, but it runs and has decent power. As for the Mercury . . . I started replacing wires . . . lots of brittle crumbly. I dis-assembled the stator and tested the ignition module plate...
