Updating the motor on an old boat

Oh yes very much operator error on his part, I spoke to him again explaining it was not just me who thought the issues this summer were his issues not the motor (I showed him this post) and is still convinced the motor is bad and needs replacement. I'm hoping that if we don't replace it this...

Updating the motor on an old boat

Thanks for the detailed response, a few things, the motor is a 1984 Mercury so I am not sure where it sits on the rating but it currently has enough power. My father is the one who wants less on it than it already has. As for the older being more reliable if maintaned, I know they are solid...

Updating the motor on an old boat

Currrently it has an 80 or 85 on it, I don't remember. I think the boat goes slow for 80hp but the engine is old so probably not putting out much HP compared to what it should. His goal for power/speed is enough to get on plane in 6 inch chop and go into a headwind.

Updating the motor on an old boat

Bit of an off spot, my father now owns my old boat but he is not happy with the enigne being old and leaving him/us stranded a few times. Last summer he said he wanted a new engine on it, was thinking a 5 year old engine. I am not sure this is possible since the boat is a 1977 Crestliner...

Where do you get your boat news?

Not exactly what I am looking for but yes everyone should try to be active in their local boating community.

Where do you get your boat news?

I am looking to find more sources for boat news that others think are good. I have found a bunch of sites but most of them seem to be mainly small and not updated much. What sites do you use to get your boating news? I mainly watched different YouTube channels before but seems most of them are...

What to have done for summer prep on near new boat

I bought a new glastron GT 185 with the 200HP 4.5L Merc last year and ran it for the season for just under 20 hours. Last fall I had them winterize the boat, that included (according to invoice) shrink wrap, winterization (assume fluid?), changes oil and filter, added fuel stabilizer, changed...

    Puppy on the boat

Hey all, I've got a bit of a delima, I recently got a new puppy (lab) and I'd like to have it so he could come out on the boat with us as it's normal for me to spend from 8 am to 7pm away from the apartment and I'd rather not leave him alone that long doesn't seem fair. I have a 2018 Glastron...

    Trailer coupler lock

I'm wondering what a good trailer couple lock would be. I know that depends on the coupler, mine takes a 1/4" pin thru it, I found one on Princess A u t o that went thru and a lock slide onto it. That worked fine for about 3 trips till I fell and it bent so badly I had to break it off. I'm...

    Checking for damage

Over the weekend I took out my Glastron GT 185 (bowrider) and the waves were less than pleasant ever at slow speeds. I tried to keep up with the other boats of similar size and type but could not do the 35 mph they were, I settled in at 23-25 after doing 35 and taking a hell of a beating for 5...

Difference between the 4.5L 200 vs 250 HP

I was wondering what the differences between the Merc 4.5L 200 vs the 4.5L 250 HP? I have a new boat with it and was wondering if you could modify it like you could with the old outboard to get to the higher HP on the same engine block. Hope that makes sense... Monday morning thoughts are still...

Best way to keep a boat in good condition?

I was hoping to get some advice on how I can keep my boat in the best condition possible while still leaving it out in the sun. My boat is stored with a custom full cover out in a gravel marina yard. It is a brand new (2018) Glastron GT 185 with wakeboard tower. Fresh water lakes only. I have...

    When to replace prop?

I recently took a good ding to my prop and skeg, prop is paint scraped on one blade and on the other two are small dings about the width of a quarter and maybe deep as half a cm. Skeg took a harder hit, it now has a wave in the bottom of it with no paint on the tip. All this on a boat with 4.5...

What to look for in a rebuild boat

I'm again looking to buy a boat that I will rebuild, I found one 4 years ago but sold it because found a better one I never bothered to restore because it was 'good enough for now'. Ended up selling that boat to my dad. I'm curious what everyone here looks for when they are boat shopping for...

    Navigation apps/tools

I am wondering what everyone uses for navigation, mostly in their smaller boats (sub 25'). I am thinking of using the navonics app on iOS as it seems cheap and I have used it before with good results. Is there something better for small back lakes and the St Lawrence river? Normally I have just...

Storing a boat at a marina, how to cover it

I am going to be storing my boat at a marina (on land) and am wondering how best to cover the boat so it does not see extra wear due to the weather. I was thinking just a cover from CTC but had one before and it sucked. Also have a wakeboard tower so not sure how that would work. Am I best to...

    Explorer towing a bowrider

I recently got a 2018 Glastron GT 185 and I plan to tow it with my 2013 Ford Explorer. It is the V6 one with tow package from the factory. Never towed with it before but should be good weight wise. I am not sure weather I need tow mirrors or not. I have not picked up the boat yet and won't till...

Just bought a new boat, what should I know?

I bought a new 2018 Glastron GT 185 today at the boat show, been looking at these boats for a few years and the numbers finally made sense for me. Anyways it is my first I/O boat and my first boat newer than the 70's, I've been boating for 9 years now and have a good grasp on how to handle a...

Figuring out where to store boat come spring near the GTA

I am looking to get a boat once again after going a painful year without one. I live in the GTA (Ontario Canada) and am wondering what those who live in the city or near by do with their boats for storage and where they tend to boat. I'm from a bit east of the GTA so if anyone has suggestions...
