    1150 Link & Sync Question

The hull looks pretty flat bottomed. She will slide quite easily with a flat bottom. I would remove the whale tail. They are useful for getting on plane, but you say that is not an issue, and they usually scrub off some top speed. BTW that motor has 1976-77 decals on it.

Sure, $20/qt at amazon. I would expect 1 qt to be enough. Search for Kitty hair, for that product...

    Mercury 175 wont shift

Take a look at the crowleymarine site. They have the exploded parts pictures for your motor. The shift rod bushing is likely a piece of plastic wrapped around the shift rod top casting bushing surface, just below the lower carb. Actually in the parts list, you may not even have a bushing...

    1150 Link & Sync Question

If the distributor is set to spark #1 plug at TDC, idle pickup setting is TDC, not 4-6*BTDC, as it should be. You may not need to move the collar on the distributor. However, if the idle pickup timing is incorrect, you adjust it using that collar. That is the idle pickup setting procedure...

    1150 Link & Sync Question

There is a collar on the distributor, secured by two bolts with 5/16" heads. This collar is about 1/2 way up the distributor body and rotates to set the carbs to open. So, with spark plugs 2-6 out, installed in wires and grounded, prop off, motor in gear, jumper the starter solenoid to crank...

Fuel Tank Shape - Lesson Learned

So you are not going to try polyester putty? It won't run and gets as hard as peanut butter. You could use the kitty hair putty, which is even thicker and latterly stronger...not that you need any lateral strength.

    1150 Link & Sync Question

You only need to grease the driveshaft to protect the driveshaft seal from tearing. You grease the splines to allow you to take it apart the next time. Link and synch sets the carbs to open at 4-6* BTDC. Setting the Idle speed usually is a retardation of the spark, so yes, the motor should...

    Mercury 175 wont shift

Those upper shiftshafts have a single bushing in the midsection. I never saw one corrode, however, I suppose they could rust in the swivel pin, but I never saw that either.... Drop the gearcase first. Now disconnect the shift cable at the motor. Now tap on the upper shift shaft, from the...

    Boat motor won’t start

2 stroke Mercs have fuel pumps driven by the crankcase pulses via a diaphragm. If that diaphragm gets a hole in it, raw fuel will flood the crankcase and spark plugs. Fuel pump rebuild kits are cheap. You might rebuild or at least inspect it.

Johnson/evinrude long shaft to short shaft

You might check the powerhead base gasket on each. If they are the same, it likely will work. Also, the gearcase likely has the 2 piece driveshaft. The driveshafts can be swapped, although you may break the connector for the 2 pieces.

1996 Mercury 115 2 stroke steering cable broke off in tilt tube

The tilt tube is likely steel. You will need to hang the motor by the flywheel (use flywheel lifting tool), and unbolt the 2 nuts on the tilt tube. Drive the tilt tube out of the two transom brackets and triple clamp and replace it. Crowleymarine shows the tilt tube is NLA new. You might get...

50 HP mercury wont shift into N or R

You do not need any gaskets or seals. You do need to put some grease on the driveshaft and shift shaft splines, before reassembly. You also need to mate driveshaft and shift shaft splines, during reassembly.

How do I check kill switch?

If she won't fire with ether, you have no spark. If you have spark, and still no fire, the timing must be way off. I would recommend you find top dead center on the top cylinder and observe the timing marks. They should indicate TDC, or real near to it. I am not sure if flywheel can slip on...

    Depth gauge alarm

The transducer often does not work in some parts of the boat. Has it ever worked for you in this location. Some folks epoxy or caulk the transducers in place, as Dingbat says. Hopefully they test them in that spot before. My boat once needed a cup of water dumped into the bilge, at the...

    1150 Link & Sync Question

You may want to buy a new waterpump base. It will come with a new seal. I do believe the rubber "lips" face down. Make sure the driveshaft is clean and greased before installing new pump base and seal. Sand it clean if necessary. Grease both splines. Not sure if you realized that...

50 HP mercury wont shift into N or R

It is very possible for the shift shaft to be so far in forward that it will not shift out of it. Neutral is CCW from forward. Reverse is CCW from neutral. Drop gearcase, set control to neutral, set gearcase to neutral, by turning lower shift rod CCW until it clicks into neutral, then align...

1990 Johnson 60 hp no at power full throttle, no cough or sputter

If the motor is truly going 3000 RPM and you are going 5 MPH, it is not the elevation or growth. Either the tach is wrong or more likely, the prop or gears are slipping.

    Depth gauge alarm

Is the transducer inside the hull or on the transom? If on transom, make sure it points down, not detecting the hull. If inside the hull, it may be hitting some structure inside the fiberglass or some void. Maybe move it, to a solid glass part of the hull. It also must be wet to work properly.

    1150 Link & Sync Question

The image in post #51 is the drive key for the impeller. It comes in most kits, if not all kits. It is essential as it drives the impeller. I like to install the gearcase in neutral. BTW - There is no issue installing the gearcase in any gear. Neutral is simpler, IMo. Installing in...

Fuel Tank Shape - Lesson Learned

Gee, put some globs of polyester putty on the tank to correspond with the neoprene pads stuck to the tank.. Drop the fuel tank on the hull and clamp it down. The neoprene pads will be captured by the poly putty and the tank will be supported.
