Any concern using a boat in saltwater that has always been in freshwater?

Actually, use zinc anode in saltwater. Outboards are designed to use in saltwater. Flush it with freshwater if you can. if not don't worry about it. Make sure to grease the steering rod a couple of times during the season.

Getting heavy scale off of the outdrive

On-Off cleaner is bad for metal. I think that is what you used from Starbrite. It has 3 acids and some alcohol, again bad for metal. Use some purple stuff and scrubby pads. If that doesn't get it, scrap, sand and prime and paint.

    Mercury 80HP Mounting on transom

Depending on the boat (high performance or not), the shim may be a good idea. On high performance boats, they can lessen drag, w/o inducing ventilation. No way to tell w/o a water test.

    1978 Mercury 700 Control Box

Info on controllers has always been hard to get, for some reason. The good news is that the function of the wiring is the same as most motors. The only differences are the electrical plugs. Since you need an engine wiring harness anyway, maybe source an available (Sierra) ADI harness and...

    Mercury 80HP Mounting on transom

You need two 3/8" bolts in the base of the transom clamp slots. There are 2 holes each on the power trim brackets. it is very important that the PTT brackets be bolted, as the power of the motor is pushing against those brackets. Not sure how to answer your question. Perhaps the PTT...

Black Max 150 overheating and water pressure

40PSi is not usual for that motor. The poppit should open at about 15PSI. Since the motor is new to you, I would replace both thermostats and rebuild the waterpump. I would also repair the poppit valve. make sure you have the exact year of the motor. Thermostats and waterpump kits are...

    1978 Mercury 700 Control Box

I have not seen a wiring harness like that before. It is different than my '77 and my '73 Mercs had. You do have ADI ignition which helps narrow it down. I would see what Crowleymarine website recommends. Look up your serial number on the maxrules site and see what year it thinks you have...

Epoxy type to use in water jacket

Marine-Tex is a good product. I have never used JB weld. Your fix sounds like it will work with most any epoxy. Make sure the water jacket area is sanded with fine paper and wiped with acetone, before applying epoxy. Fill the hole and overlap the hole with as much thickness as you dare, as...

    Motor wont start

Clean your battery connections, and starter solenoid and starter positive and ground cables. The motor must crank pretty fast to make a strong spark. The motor will fire much more easily when using starting fluid. When using starting fluid, always have a fire extinguisher at hand ready to go...

Where might I find a repair manual of a 2003 200hp Johnson 90 deg engine.

Marineengine web site had manuals. Have your model number ready.

    1978 Mercury 700 Control Box

That motor likely has the old external quick disconnect on the starboard side of the motor. There are likely lots of them around used. Search flea bay under MerControl. What wire colors do you have? I would expect that motor, if 1978, to have an ADI ignition and multiple coils. I thought it...

Mercury 85hp runs fine on Muffs but Boggs down in Sea

You should be able to leave the carbs open. Can you not get to the mixture screws with the airbox installed? just curious.

What Control Box do I need? 8 pin or 10 pin'?

Looks like an 8 pin connector. The other wires would be for trim and tilt. Not sure what cables you need.

Propeller size for 1977 mercury 1150

Try trimming it while on plane. You are looking for 5500RPM.

Propeller size for 1977 mercury 1150

NADA says boat weighs 950#. Engine is 300#. Trailer is likely about 300#, but it's weight should be avail at the trailer OEM web site. You might weigh is, as 17P prop is what I would expect would work fine. Tacho is accurate? Motor is running on all cylinders?

Replace stop button with kill switch

Black/yellow is the wiring color for the ignition kill circuit on most OBs. Black is the wire code for ground on most OBs. Connecting those together will kill most ignitions. I have never researched your motor however.

    1984 Mercury 50 confused!

Are both carbs opening fully? Sometimes linkage between them slips.

Replace chain on floating dock - recommendations?

I would expect galvanized chain used for boat anchors (proof), to last 20+ years in fresh water. 1/4" chain or heavier if you want should work.

    12V armature

When you say armature, you mean field coil, right? Field coil should be attached to the outer casing. Both armature and field are coils. On the other hand, for that PTT unit, the pump holds the bottom of the armature. if you removed the motor from the pump unit, the armature bottom will...

2000 Johnson 200 runs reverse( fly wheel spinning backwards) HELP , ITS CURSED!!

Sounds like you need to check your timing. If the spark happens too soon, a 2 cycle engine can start backwards. Merc used that feature for reverse on it's direct reversing motor.
