    Take the hydraulic lines off the pump. The hydraulic ports on the cylinders strip real easy. The lines are full of oil. The pump will not leak much, just the oil on the outside part of the control valve. A fraction of an oz.

    The pulse is very short. I would therefore think you would need an o-scope to see the pulse to the coil. Maybe a DVA would also work.

    Move the throttle and see what attachment point moves in the right direction. Mercury OBs push the throttle closed. J/E OBs push the throttle open. Not sure about Yammies. Also, I have a similar (identical) control for 1998, so you may be able to get some info on the control from the OEM.

    One more thing. An awl is a good tool to have available. Sometimes you can see the edge of the pivot hole. An awl can center it easily, so the pin fits.

    Dashboard mounted trim switches are pretty old. Most are now thumb-operated toggle switches in the throttle handle. Much safer and more convenient. You might replace your control with one of those with the built in trim switches.
