    Portside hard to steer underload

The right handed prop on your motor wants to "walk" to the right side of the boat. This causes it to pull to starboard. Loosen the bolt holding the zinc anode and rotate the fin on the anode full CCW, and tighten it. Expect the torque to be different at different trim settings. You can only...

    RPM gauge not hooked up

A modern tach needs +12VDC, ground and a signal wire. Look for a cluster of purple, black and grey wires. Purple is +12VDC, black is ground and grey is signal.

Prop caught on trap, engine wont turn over

If the driveshaft spines have been stripped, the crankshaft would likely turn. I think either the prop shaft is bent enough to jam the gears or the bearings broke in the gearcase, or the driveshaft is bent enough to jam the crankshaft.

    porpoising problem

Trim down is the opposite of trimming up or out. Trim down means the outdrive gets closer to the transom.

    1979 mercury 140 outboard

The top carb tends to run leaner than the mid carb. The bottom carb tends to run richer than the mid carb, in my experience.

    '87 80hp Mercury won't idle

A fuel leak can also let in air, causing loss of fuel for idling. High speed pumps more fuel and may mask it. Fix the leak and retest. If that doesn't fix it, rebuild fuel pump.

    Outboard Lock Recommendations?

Boy those are some really dumb thieves. How much can they get for a stolen 40 year old motor? They are not smart enough to realize it ain't worth it? I suppose you need to defend even old stuff from those blitherings..... No one here in NJ would consider buying a 40 year old motor, stolen...

    Fuel hose lifespan?

That's crap. Fuel lines, even cheap black ones last a long time. Even after 20 years, I have never had one break, as you described. They guy who said they needed to be replaced every few months is uninformed, or worse. Find some SAE ones in black.

Prop caught on trap, engine wont turn over

Sounds like a problem with the gearcase. You must have hit that trap at high RPMs. You should drop the gearcase and see if that frees up the crankshaft. If so, you probably need a new gearcase (see SEI for replacement) or perhaps a repair. I would check the driveshaft and see if she is...

LF 1986 90 HP Mercury L6 Owners Manual

Owners manuals do not have much in them. Save your money for a factory service manual for your engine.

    1979 mercury 140 outboard

You need to set the mixture screws to 1-1/2 turns open from lightly seated. The motor should run at this setting. Warm the engine up and run at idle in gear. Usually that carb setting is too lean to allow acceleration. So try to accelerate. if the motor stalls or fails to rev up, open the...

    1979 mercury 140 outboard

The carbs only have a single adjustment screw. It is about 2PM on the face of the carb. Gee, if you rebuilt the carbs, you should have seen it.

    Proof of value

A marine survey on an old and cheap boat? Really? I would look for a fly-by-night insurance company who would insure it for liability, and call it a day.

    Choke Wire

You should be able to see the rear of the quick disconnect plug. The wire should be there. There is a couple of bolts and a clamp, and the wiring harness slips out. I would use the OEM part number and do a search on the web. All the aftermarket harnesses are likely made by Sierra or GLM.

    Choke Wire

The choke wire is grey in color. The balance of the wire should be hanging out of the quick disconnect male plug on the inside of the lower cowl. As Scott advises, if the insulation is falling of the harness in general, it is best to replace it. The web will have several sources, with...
