    Johnson Engine Backfiring?

You should repost this in the Johnnyrude forum. Those guys/gals will know your engine inside-out. I would guess a timing problem....

    Proof of value

I doubt you will want collision insurance. Can you get liability insurance w/o it's value? FYI Allstate would not insure it at all due to it's age. You can try a kelly blue book or NADA type site. Figure it is worth very little, say $500

1979 1150 thunderbolt merc drive shaft

Where are you located? I have an old IL6 gearcase laying around.

1979 1150 thunderbolt merc drive shaft

Mercury gearcases of different years had drive shaft bearings with the taper down as well as up. Some of these had preload pins on the driveshaft. As far as I know the entire gearcase would interchange. I do not know if you could switch bearings between them. You may need to buy a new...

    Year of Manufacture

1975 and earlier 850s had distributor ignition. I do not believe 850 were made after 1979. They were 800s then. The maxrules site will give serial numbers and years. I think they have Canadian serial numbers.

Fuel Tank Contamination (for your information)

Jerry has covered his butt with that answer. Gasohol E10 has been used in much older motors than yours, w/o incident.

Motor and Tilt stopped working - other electronics good

Normally the starter solenoid and the trim/tilt are connected to the battery in the engine harness. A lot of motors have main fuses on that circuit. The boat accessories are fused via a fuse block under the dashboard. Who know how the CMC unit is fused, however, I would be looking for a blown...

    1989 Mariner wire harness extension

Looks like the available harnesses in your year were 12 wire, 10 wire, 9 wire and 7 wire. Each has a part number you should be able to use in your search. Which do you have? https://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/parts/1989_250.cfm

    1989 Mariner wire harness extension

What kind of cable do you have? Those round plugs were pretty universal in Mercs after they phased out the external quick disconnect plug.

1999 Johnson 150 Bogs when warm

Strength of the telltale stream makes no difference. If the thermostats stick closed or don't open enough or soon enough, motor will get hotter than designed, possibly leading to heatstroke.

1999 Johnson 150 Bogs when warm

Thermostat covers are plastic, right? They should not corrode into the block. I broke one of the small hex heads on the cover, but the larger one removed the cover.

Merc 90 tower of power water in fuel

Condensation is not your issue. There is very little condensation and the alcohol present in regular unleaded gasoline will easily absorb it. The real fix is to lift the tongue of the trailer and pull the fuel gauge sender off the tank. Now stick a siphon hose into the bottom rear of the tank...

1999 Johnson 150 Bogs when warm

Does this only happen when you have run it and then stopped to fish or swim for an hour or so. Upon restart it runs poorly and wants to stall. Is that it? I am not sure of the fix. I would recommend you put in new thermostats, as it may have heat soak. Also, run it for a minute in neutral...

    Ignition switch & ignition circuit

Normally the M terminals are for magneto, which is the ignition system of outboards. However, your description is the opposite of that. I would expect you want to use the C terminals. You might doublecheck the function of those C terminals.

    Gas Appearing in bilge

The tank should not leak, regardless of temperature or fullness. In my experience the fuel tank gauge sender is the most likely leak, but the tank needs to be full or the boat needs to be in use. What is the tank made of? Aluminum can get pin holes in the bottom rear from water sitting there.

    porpoising problem

The prop change would not do that. Check the hull for straightness? Not sure what to suggest.

Fuel Tank Contamination (for your information)

Your motor (if a 1997 or newer) is made for unleaded alcohol fuel. The membranes and fuel lines will last just fine. A water separator is all the filtration you will need. it separates water by gravity, and contains a 10 or 20 micron paper filter which is more than adequate. Debris will not...

    Ignition switch & ignition circuit

Did you get the correct kill switch? You need one that opens, when tripped.

Bayliner....no clearance to remove steering cable?

Gee, I installed a 1/2" lag bolt in the header of the garage door. That and a cum-a-long (cable hoist), will lift the OB, if you have enough height. You can skip the hoist, drop the trailer tongue, connect a chain from OB to header and then raise the tongue and pull the mounting bolts.

Fuel Tank Contamination (for your information)

Find a better gasoline source. Fuel from gas stations should be clean and fresh. it sounds like you are getting old dirty gasoline. Rust in the carbs did not come from the carbs nor likely from the boat fuel tank. That points to the gas station I would recommend a fuel/water separator. You...
