    Wrong New Prop Or What?

Forum won't let me properly respond, my comments are interspersed above

Mercruiser 4.3L TKS Won't start when warm.

Nice! (For future reference, just unplug the switch if you need to make it home)

5.7L 1984, Rough idle at start up, then ok after a minute or so

Yes, but in that case the engine runs normally. Wonky running + wonky tach = missing spark until proven otherwise imo

5.7L 1984, Rough idle at start up, then ok after a minute or so

Well, that's the tach acting as it should. And obvious. Doesn't sound like what's going on here.

    Wrong New Prop Or What?

2" of prop isn't going That's why I was asking time between runs. If it worked fine in FL, then didn't a week later in Co that's a different story than if it sat a season

5.7L 1984, Rough idle at start up, then ok after a minute or so

Doesn't explain the tach though. I still think you're misfiring. Did you ever do a cylinder drop test? Also, I'd throw a timing light on each plug wire while it's misbehaving and make sure you're getting a consistent spark to each cylinder

    Wrong New Prop Or What?

How long between runnings in FL vs. Co? Like, move from Florida and then not use it again till the next spring?

Craigslist /marketplace or junkyard for donor motor?

Much easier when you don't have to worry about breaking anything 😉 I would advise saving ALL hardware, convenient mounting brackets, and any thick cables

Craigslist /marketplace or junkyard for donor motor?

Issue was with clearing the radiator/shroud. Don't remember exactly was catching it at the rear, but it wouldn't lift straight out. 3 hours from arrival to leaving I didn't think was bad.

Craigslist /marketplace or junkyard for donor motor?

No way. A marine engine takes way more abuse than an auto. You find a smooshed truck and chances are the engine is ok. Took me 3 hours to pull the engine, I didn't have the special tool needed to pull the radiator fan. Also, I found a manual transmission that had the transmission already pulled...

    winterizing merc?

Fwiw, the antifreeze rec from Merc didn't come in until later. '80's instructions has it as optional. My gut is that your corrosion comes from running heated salt water through the block all year, not sitting after it's been flushed with fresh water and drained.

1988 GM 5.7 stalling when slowing down

Moving the throttle back/cutting spark, wondering if you're somehow triggering your MOB switch. I'd suspect an intermittent connection problem somewhere over a bad coil/module

Instrument cluster poorly illuminated; tachometer doesn't work...

If you have glass buss fuses, those like to corrode and cause voltage drop as well. You can perform voltage drop tests to see which connections are causing problems

1987 Merc 4.3 Rebuild or replace?

Not sure why you don't just get a wrecker block. $1k cheaper, saves you a *ton* of time. A truck engine going bad is rarely the reason it's in the yard...Usually they offer a 30 day warranty or something. Check compression. You won't have to worry about any internal rust or cracked block like a...

1987 Merc 4.3 Rebuild or replace?

Ebay for the carb. Intake was new.

1987 Merc 4.3 Rebuild or replace?

The intake, carb, throttle bracket, water pump, bolts, and +/- starter are the only add ons needed for the vortec. Well under $1k. Can you get a 2bbl vortec intake? Yeah, I'd avoid the non-vortec balance shafts for that reason. When I was looking at the yards, nearly everything was newer/vortec.

1987 Merc 4.3 Rebuild or replace?

You can pull a block yourself and you can get it done for well <$2k. If you want to do vortec: 1. If you can find a stick it will save you from swapping the flywheel 2. You'll need new: water pump (<$100), starter (<100) (or you can drill out the holes on your original to fit M10 bolts--a new...
