Old(er) Mercury Small Outboard Swivel Bracket Repair ???

Some progress to report . . . I got a few different types of cutting blades in hopes of being able to cut the top part of the pivot pin and free the pivot assembly from the saddle. A 5" "T" shank metal cutting blade did the trick (hand sawing), and I now have the 2 pieces separated. . . , I...

1990 (ish) Yamaha 3 HP only runs on choke

I ordered a new shutoff valve, but it looks like it may take a week or so to get here. Since I plan on using the motor this coming weekend, I put a temporary fuel shutoff in there . . . the kind for lawnmowers :D . . I'll just be opening the engine cover to turn it on/off. One thing I have...

1990 (ish) Yamaha 3 HP only runs on choke

Another Update . . . After running well for a while, the motor started having fits . . . not running right, then running fine for a while . . . stupid thing  So, I replaced the fuel line that leads from the shut-off valve to the fuel pump with a clear hose to see if gas is making its...

1990 (ish) Yamaha 3 HP only runs on choke

Update. . . (fixed :noidea: ) I tried out the 'repaired' carburetor this morning, and it did not seem to run any better than before. So, something else must be messed up . . . I'm thinking the float or fuel pump. . Anyway, enough fussing with that . . . bring on the new carburetor ( $57...

Old(er) Mercury Small Outboard Swivel Bracket Repair ???

Update . . . I received the stainless steel bar stock that I ordered (actually it is a piece of SS NPT pipe) and re-measured everything with my micrometer. Existing carbon steel pivot pin measured at 0.873" The stainless steel material measured at 0.872" :) :thumb: So it looks like I got...

To Freedom (boat club) or not to Freedom that is my question....

And just remember, no matter how rough it gets out there, you always want to keep the propellers in the water . . . :D .

    Engine Oil Leak Mericruiser 4.3

Looks like this . . . :noidea: Maybe eBay . . . many of the marine places sell through there and you may just find someone that has a new one in stock. Labor is going to be a killer

1990 (ish) Yamaha 3 HP only runs on choke

I found some of these 'plugs' on McMaster and ordered them yesterday . . . they arrived today !!! . I measured the holes in the carburetor body at about 4mm . . . these are 3/16" since McMaster did not have the metric sizes. Hopefully they will be a good enough fit. If that fails, I...

1990 (ish) Yamaha 3 HP only runs on choke

Thanks, I'll have to check the fuel line while the engine is operating . . . the tank is a bit of a gravity feed and there is a fuel pump that is built into the carb. Anyway . . . I think I found something that would explain the issues, and it is quite bizarre actually. I took a closer look...

1990 (ish) Yamaha 3 HP only runs on choke

I inherited a 3 HP Yamaha OB a couple of years ago from a relative. The engine had been purchased at the end of the 1990 boating season, winterized and then never used. Single cylinder 3 HP, internal tank. . . . spotless :thumb: When I first got the engine, it was a bit cranky for having been...

Old(er) Mercury Small Outboard Swivel Bracket Repair ???

Update . . . I re-built the carburetor and re-installed it . . . Got the saddle/swivel assembly off of the engine and now am going to work on seeing if I can get the pivot pin out. . . I am trying some conventional methods first (PB Blaster, CRC Freeze off, heating w/ torch . . . ) to see...

Old(er) Mercury Small Outboard Swivel Bracket Repair ???

Thanks for the comments, guys. I can get a fresh water mid-section (swivel assembly) for about $125-150 on eBay. So that will be my 'Plan B', if I end up trashing the original swivel. I'll have to see what I can get for stainless steel tubing to match the diameter of the existing pivot pin...

Old(er) Mercury Small Outboard Swivel Bracket Repair ???

Hi Folks, My outboards have been tag-teaming me the past week or so . . . I recently resurrected my 1969 Mercury 7.5 HP to use on my dinghy, having replaced the water pump and doing a carburetor clean. It ran well but the swivel bracket keeps stiffening up . . . after a bit of usage it seems...

    Winterizing your Mercruiser

Looks like you got a 1990 Mercruiser Alpha One. . . . The outdrive probably weighs about 140 lbs. Many of us have built outdrive stands out of a moving dolly and a few sticks of wood. I have 2 Bravo outdrives on my boat and they weight about 170lbs each. I got tired of lifting them a few...

1998 Chaparral 252 gas shock issues????

These struts you mean . . . ? . . Do you know what was there originally? Maybe they were replaced previously with a lighter strut/spring? 30-40 lbs seems light for an engine cover spring . . . :noidea:

Ways to mount anchor light to boat cover on bouy

If your mooring (buoy) is in a high traffic area for night boating, then it is probably worth a light. some solar lights may be able to last all night on a decent charge ( a sunny day). You certainly want the light to be at the highest point of the boat (windshield maybe) to be visible in all...

Interesting boat building process - RAMCAP

I often look into various boat building processes, and recently came across a process called RAMCAP (Everglades Boats). It is an interesting twist on creating foam filled chambers that many of us undertake when doing structural restoration of our aged boats :) Rather than building a structure...

    Wearing a mask.

The summer months have brought a resurgence of cases in some areas that were doing well. In my area (Massachusetts), masks out in public are common place. Stores all require masks and some limit the number of people that can enter. Once in a while I go into my office in Boston, and just about...
