Need help: Bizarre Bravo III freshwater galvanic corrosion quandry

What's weird is it is very clear my gimbal ring is acting as the anode for my boat, while the actual magnesium anodes are doing nothing.

Need help: Bizarre Bravo III freshwater galvanic corrosion quandry

The anodes are not depleting and I have no idea why--maybe a residual aluminum oxide barrier?; maybe the packaging was wrong and I got zinc anodes? It looks like the metal is "passivated" for what it's worth. I replaced the existing aluminum ones with magnesium in 2024 (did not splash in 2024)...

    End of Season oil changes?

I would say every 100 hours for good quality full synthetic oils like Mobil 1 15W-50 and Merc High Performance Gear Lube. I would also add that it is wise to change the oil every year due to acids/moisture in the oil no matter the number of hours.

Need help: Bizarre Bravo III freshwater galvanic corrosion quandry

I have also checked continuity between the bonding wires and there is minimal resistance (minus the paint in certain areas and surface corrosion). The real question is why are the magnesium anodes not working? Here are some more pictures:

Need help: Bizarre Bravo III freshwater galvanic corrosion quandry

Something very odd is going on with my boat and its 7.4L/Bravo III setup that I do not understand at all. It has only started happening upon boating in the Great Lakes and plugging in at Michigan municipal (hot?!) marinas. Here is some backstory: Soul Rebel became a freshwater boat in 2023...

1995 Chaparral 2550 SX Refit and Restoration

Con't: Another small project I did last year was to replace the warped aluminum piano hinge on the deck storage hatch with a proper robust stainless one: Further, here are pictures of the (completed) rehabbed cushion: Here is the other cockpit speakers (had to be mounted in...

1995 Chaparral 2550 SX Refit and Restoration

Another project I did in the last year, was replacing the woeful 6.5" Kenwood speakers that I installed back in 2020, with some 6"x9" three-way ones from Polk; I also replaced the Kenwood stereo with a Fusion RA-70 and the results have been fantastic!: we can finally hear music over the engine...

1995 Chaparral 2550 SX Refit and Restoration

Before the trip, I had done some gelcoat repairs on the engine box (since I had leftover gelcoat in the factory color from Spectrum), but unfortunately on our shakedown cruise a seat cushion with damaged trim and shoddy rusty staples gouged the fresh repairs. Thus I decided do design and...

1995 Chaparral 2550 SX Refit and Restoration

Time for an update: We have finished the hull/deck joint, rubrail, gelcoat, and a myriad of other miscellaneous repairs. Soul Rebel has now splashed three times--for three different trips--in 2025. The first time was a short day hop with family, then a longer, ~35 NM crossing from Manistique...

Alpha 1 gen 2 bellows service

I have done that once lol! I was able to replace it without removing the engine but it was a *****! I was like 21 or 22 at the time and was made of rubber.

Alpha 1 gen 2 bellows service

In my experience, the OEM ones last for at least 15-20 years if stored properly. My 30 year old boat is on its second set that were replaced in 2018.

replacing transom, has anyone used AL square tube instead of wood?

It can last practically forever if one properly seals all edges and drilled holes with epoxy! Contrary to iboats opinion, boats don't just rot with great care but from misuse and abuse.

1995 Chaparral 2550 SX Refit and Restoration

I will update this thread with some more of last year's projects and stuff that I was recently working on, when I get back up there in a few weeks time. Did some resealing and rubrail repairs, added a new Fusion stereo system with some nice 6x9 speakers, etc. Nonetheless, I think we are going a...

    Volvo Penta 7.4 Gi

VP sucks unless you like overpriced special tools to do basically anything including removing the props which you must do to do basic drive service on many mid-DP models.

2003 Yamaha HDPI No Start/Sputter Has Spark

You act like those things can be easily tested without YDS. Everything that could have been tested with standard equipment has been tested, including pump pressure at the VST tank which is erratic and momentarily goes to 50 with the key "on" before cranking when it goes to zero. If you want to...
