Should you buy 20 year old boat to fix up or 10 year old boat?

    I bought a (then) 14 year old boat...fixed it...then you're good a few years....then you fix it again....good a few years....then fix what comes up next....and so on....and now....that boat is 33 years old.... I think someone put it well....there are used boats...and used up boats....the former...

Should you buy 20 year old boat to fix up or 10 year old boat?

Save your money longer, buy a boat that's about 5 years old, old boats have old outboards and old outboards in many cases can't be rebuilt due to internal aluminum corrosion and then you are stuck with new or late model used outboard prices. Its just not worth it between possible wood rot and...

BTV Bayliner Single Axle Trailer - Over-run / Inertia Brakes?

Looking at the backing plates that are available in the EU it looks to me that you'd have to replace the whole axle, I don't think that their drum backing plate assemblies can bolt up to a US spec axle.

BTV Bayliner Single Axle Trailer - Over-run / Inertia Brakes?

I’d like to know exactly what the EU’s objection to hydraulic brakes on trailers is….I’m wondering how cables are better that hydraulics…even conservative old Henry Ford eventually had to give up cable operated brakes! In any case if you are in salt water not being able to use surge operated...

BTV Bayliner Single Axle Trailer - Over-run / Inertia Brakes?

Ah so I guess yours are required to have a parking brake so that leaves out disc brakes; although disc can be made with a small internal parking brake but I’ve never seen that on trailer disc brakes only on vehicle brakes. If that’s the case I’d try to use galvanized 10” drum brakes. The wheels...

BTV Bayliner Single Axle Trailer - Over-run / Inertia Brakes?

And the brakes if cable operated would be 10” drums or discs.

BTV Bayliner Single Axle Trailer - Over-run / Inertia Brakes?

If it’s a 5 lug hub they are a 5 on 4.5” circle bolt pattern with 1750 lb capacity hubs. Look up bearing sizes on www.etrailer.com or www.easternmarine.com

Questions in towing my 2016 H190

I think you need a different bow roller set up that won’t interfere with the strap. I’d consider adding a real safety chain or a shackle like I have on mine. I have a 1988 200 Horizon on a roller trailer and use both the normal safety chain and the shackle.

    winterizing question

Just did mine yesterday, changed oil & filter, fogged with 2 cans of fogging oil spraying at the same time to stall it, drained everything manually and back filled with Sierra PG antifreeze…

    Cold air intake

I removed the restrictive huge plastic air muffler on the front of my Jeep Hemi and replaced it with a Mopar CAI. It sounds GREAT and makes servicing easier. Does it add power? Who knows but I love to hear what’s under the hood

    No Spare Tire Included!

Before this pandemic we used to take the 900 mile round trip from Long Island NY to Montreal QC for the Formula 1 race and from LI to Watkins Glen for the NASCAR race. There are parts of the Adirondack Northway that are very desolate with no cell service. I also take a 1/2 drive electric impact...

    Bearing Buddies

I used the spindle lube hubs on my 3500 lb axle from 2004-2021 and never had to replace the bearings all I had to do was grease them 2x a year and I replaced the grease seals when replacing the galvanized backing plates usually every 5 seasons. The bearings never had water in them. The key to...

    No Spare Tire Included!

I don’t buy vehicles with no option for a full size spare. I spent a bit extra to add one to my wife’s 2017 Subaru Forester.

What type of oil and lube to use

PS... I don't think the Merc oil or even the Rotella or Delo have what I'd consider higher zinc level vs standard oils, this was true some time back but now not so much. I did a Blackstone oil analysis on the Delo straight 30 I used to use and also on the Merc oil I switched to about 10 years...

What type of oil and lube to use

PS only thing I can add on oil choice, is many debate the value or lack of value of the FWC rating for marine oils, well when I took my old engine apart after it blew both head gaskets and had water (that's salt water) in the oil for about a week...there was....no corrosion on any of the parts...

What type of oil and lube to use

the 15w/40 is usually certified for both gas and diesel, the S followed by a letter is for spark ignition (gas), the C followed by a letter is for compression igition (diesel) I used to use the Delo straight 30 or 40 and that at one time was certified for both, but about 10 years or so ago, I...

What type of oil and lube to use

I use the Merc/Quicksilver 25/40 motor oil and High Performance gear lube in the outdrive. Since you have a Volvo I’d use what they recommend

91 four winns 285 winterizing question

Old unit removed, you can see it was leaking between the control valve and the hydraulic cylinder, new (used) unit installed, I had to pull both exhaust manifolds to get back in there. Very common on Volvo Pentas, the seals on the hydraulic cylinders leak and VP says they can't be rebuilt so you...
