Re: 1991 Formula 242 Stringer & Bulkhead Repairs
Here are a couple more pictures . . .
You can see the wood grain imprint in the bulkhead fiberglass, and the 1/2" (+/-) that Formula raises the structure from the hull during the layup. I assume...

Re: 1991 Formula 242 Stringer & Bulkhead Repairs
I did some cutting today with the sawzall and various other tools.
First was the engine mount stringers . . .
Inside them was pretty much 'confetti'
Then I removed the rotted section of the...

Re: 1991 Formula 242 Stringer & Bulkhead Repairs
Nice thread, I like what you did with the drainage in the center section where the fuel tank lives. My boat does not have drainage in the center section and I was thinking of adding some . . ...

Here is my hand at drawing the basic reinforcement structure and highlighting the affected areas: The yellow arrows show the rotted areas and the general direction of progression. It looks like...

Re: 1991 Formula 242 Stringer & Bulkhead Repairs
OK. I got to take a look at the bulkhead and stringer 'Rot' areas after the gas tank was removed.
Here are a few pictures of what I found . . .
Here is a look at the rear bulkhead once I got...

Re: 1991 Formula 242 Stringer & Bulkhead Repairs
UPDATE: Removed the tank today . . .
After several days of prying and cutting foam it was finally able to break the tank loose from the hull. This boat is starting to wear me out . . .
anyway...
I am going to remove the tank from my boat (see signature for boat details). It is 94 gallons capacity, now empty.
I have read through the various posts here regarding fuel tank removal and the related procedures.
I have read in a couple of posts about "filling the tank with water" ???? Of...
Near record Powerball winner, a couple weeks ago from Rhode Island, just came forward to claim $336,000,000 . . . .
. . . . and then last night another person from Rhode Island hits it again for $60,000,000.
I think I gotta move there. . . .
Since I am going to be buying some fiberglass and resin materials for my bulkhead and Stringer replacement project, http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=534913 I am wondering if there will be an advantage to use vinyl ester resin to adhere to the hull and existing fiberglass surfaces.
I...
OK, boat restoration fans, here we go . . .
I started pulling things apart today to take a look at the extent of the rotted bulkhead and stringers in my boat. Just to re-cap, I had the engine out over the winter and discovered the structural issues as a result. So, it looks like I should fix...
Hi Folks:
Major boat maintenance underway . . .
I removed the engine from My Formula 242 last Fall to do some re-build work. While the engine was out, I discovered bulkhead and stringer rot . . . so here we go . . .
I figured that while I got the engine out and I am dealing with...
Hi Folks:
I am in the process of checking the structure of my boat for dry rot (or wet rot) as I have an opportunity to fix things before the boating season arrives in the northeast.
Long story made short . . .
(1) Last year I was doing some R&R on the engine mounts and as I tightened the...
It is getting to be that time of year when us "salt water guys" start thinking about anti-fouling paint as part of our prep work for the boating season. I have 2 issues . . .
#1:
I have been using ePaint EP-2000 for about 5 years on the hull with good results. The paint comes in white, which...
Re: New England Boat Show
Me too, got back a couple of hours ago . . . did not see a few brands there, but I did take a good look at the new Pursuit ST310 . . maybe next year . . .
Re: New boats seem cheaply made.
Here are a few more . . .
I did come across the new Pursuit ST310 that I had been eying . . .
. . . but as luck would have it, I was a couple $100K short.
.
Re: New boats seem cheaply made.
OK, I went to the boat show today and took pictures of various boat's glove boxes . . . I believe that some of the sales staff though I was a bit weird taking pictures of the glove box instead of something more exciting, like the instrument panel, but no...
on the forum, that is.
It was mighty surprising to the the ship wreck photo today, but being an I.T. person myself, I know what that is like.
It is good to have it back, and thanks to all who brought it back from the grasp of the bit bucket.
I have been considering selling my current boat (Formula 242 SS) and getting a bigger boat with twin outboards - maybe something around 28 feet or so ( like a Pursuit, Grady-White or Wellcraft Coastal )
I figure that I could still do some water sports with it and would have more space for...
