    the serial number is on the side of the motor just above the starter. it will be on a tag that is riveted to the block take your alternator off the motor and take it to a starter/alternator repair shop and have tested.

    Pull the dizzy, knock the roll pin out of the gear, pull the inner shaft, look in the housing. All dizzys have bushings, and napa has generic bushings for dizzys cheap

    see how much slop is in the $5 distributor shaft bushing from napa also, if you didnt set your dwell with a meter, go back to that, then set timing

    being over-powered means that if there is an issue (accident, etc), you may be 100% at fault. not to mention, your transom is designed for a 150hp. so the forces of the extra 50hp may simply rip it from the boat.

    you take the drive off you then unclamp the PDS (6 bolts), and take 3 of the bolts to jack the clamp ring off you then disconnect everything inside the boat, undo the front mount lag bolts and lift up and pull forward. your boat can not be in the water to do so

    you want to go faster, you need more power. as indicated above, with your 1983 motor that is your crank rating. your boat should be rated at 150hp. how fast do you want to go?

    looking at the casting, the bore is a thru-bore and the retention "lip" is the 4 staked areas. that is a cheesy design vs machining a tru lip. however it would save a secondary machining step.

    Did tge neighbord DPS 2 years ago, about 3 times on a stringer400, once on a stringer 800, a few times on a DPA, twice on a Bravo, once on my alpha, twice on my 290DP, a few MC-1s, about 35 or so outboards however been swapping seals on gear boxes for decades. Designed a few gear boxes as well...
