    Grew 168 restoration

Hi. I have a Grew 198 that I'm working on myself. Mine is a 1978 (i think). They were well made back in the 70's, not sure about the 90"s. I hate to say it but very likely all the wood in that boat is rotten and needs to be replaced, from the stringers up. Think about it before you pour too much...

    PVC stringers?

Interesting, I'd say it will work. You are only supporting an area that had no support before so whats the worst that can happen? If the floor in the cabin sags then chaulk it up to a learning experience. No big loss.

    PVC stringers?

Personally I'd try it. Test some resin on a small area first to see if melts the plastic. If that seems ok, Id go for it. Those boards are made to hold people on a deck lying flat so they should be strong enough on edge with a keel underneath! Also there was no stringer there when the boat was...

    1977 evinrude 85 problems

Does the tank have ventilation so that it don't build up a vacuum as the gas goes down? If not sure you could loosen the filler cap when the problem starts and see if this helps.

    Ear plugs

I was grinding off old paint off my boat today for about 1 1/2 hours and stupidly didn't use any ear protection. After I finished I could hardly hear a thing and the ringing in my ears is really loud. That was about 5 - 6 hours ago, my hearing is returning slowly but the ringing is still there...

Best way to remove harbor scum and moss from waterline and transom?

I had a very similar mess on mine after a summer in the water. Pressure washer only reduced it by about 1/2 but wouldn't take it completely off. I sanded it off today only because I plan to re=gelcoat my boat. If you find a good removal method I'd like to know it!

    transom rebuilding

I don't think coosa would be strong enough if used by itself. It is definitely water proof as I had a piece left over from an older project and purposely left it outdoors for about a year and it was just as good as the day I bought it. But I think you would need to fiberglass it on both sides...

    transom rebuilding

You could always use a foam core like Coosa, that won't rot or absorb water. Then you know you won't be doing it again. Fiberglass that in place with poly resin and you won't have to ever worry about it again!

    Plywood floor replacement...Questions

I'd take the foam out altogether, its probably wet on the bottom. Replace it with sheets of foam that are made for foundations insulation below grade, cut to fit. That way water can flow around it if it gets in, cut a hole in your stringers, seal well and let the water flow back to the bilge...

    Polyester resin ?

Yeah, thats what you want, someone who will take the time to make sure you know what your doing. Sounds like someone you can trust. I bought 5 gal poly resin a bout 2 weeks ago and paid 175 can for it and thought it was expensive, seeing your prices I guess I did OK!

method of joining new wood to existing stringer

You are very lucky, the rot is usually much worse! They didn't use glass inside the transom to save money at the expense of quality. i had to cut out a section of 2 of my stringers to install the new transom and I just inserted a length of coosa foam board into place to the same thickness (1...

    Floor and Transom Rebuild

Yep, PB is the way to go. If you are not sure of working time and and mixing etc. you could make a small amt and do a practice piece with some scraps. Definitely do some dry fitting and have a plan and everything laid out. Have some way of bracing the transom in place overnight. I cut some wood...

    fiberglassing in new floor

Yeah, I was thinking it would be easier to cut back the stringers enough to get the transom in without removing the cap. I suspect you will find rot further back then you think, but even if you don't it would still be less work. You need to do some stringer work anyway, just make the new piece a...

Using hose flush to cool engine.

From what I can see in the video, thats what they did. I don't know how long it ran.

    Primer bulb

Yeah thats kind of what I thought, so leave the bulb in place. I saved the water separator setup off my old inboard engine and wanted to use that as a backup to whats already in the outboard. Thanks for the reply.

    Primer bulb

I have another OB question. When i hook the gas hose to the copper line coming from my tank, which is built into the bow, should I leave the primer bulb inline or just go with straight gas line from the copper to the engine with the clip to hook to the engine. If the gas line is always connected...

    Metal transom protector

Yeah I didn't really like the look of them myself but was wondering if other people recommended it. I'm hoping the transom I built will hold on it own but I'll definitely be a bit nervous the first time I put it on.

Using hose flush to cool engine.

Yeah, thats what I thought. They probably only ran it for a short while, but I better check that impellor. Strange though, as they have a good reputation around here....
