Painting Prep for One part paint over gel coat

There used to be a paint product exactly for that purpose. It was dull dead grass or something like that, made by Pettit. It was likely enamel as polyurethane paint wasn't invented way back them. As for Brightside, the label will instruct that no primer is needed over gel coat in good...

    1979 70 hp choke issues

The carb shouldn't leak fuel, unless tilted up. I have not worked on those carbs, so I am not sure how the levers look. My sidebowl carbs have two levers, that work together to control the inlet needle. The straight one contacts the float, with the other one under it. Perhaps a service...

Adding A Stern Mounted Trim Switch

I assume the switch will be accessible when you are in the water, or standing next to the boat on it's trailer? If not, you should consider that, as that is the most often time I would use it. Any marine SPDT switch of at least 5A should work. $55 seems a bit high for a switch, but WM thinks...

Any saving the engine? I’m devastated

Gee, put the starter in the oven for 45 min at 250*F. No disassembly needed for fresh water.

What size Fuel Water Separator? 1998 Mercury Force 120 HP.

Gee, the metal water separator canisters do not rust in my speedboat, where everything else does. I have never had one collapse. Install them hand tight only. Using a tool on them scratches the paint, and then they can rust. Usually you can get them off by hand, but a std oil filter wrench...

    Outdrive Paint & Prep

You want the epoxy putty to be applied to bare metal. Sand the OD, wipe with acetone and then quickly apply the putty. After it sets, sand smooth and prime with zinc chromate or etching primer.

Any saving the engine? I’m devastated

Gee, I dropped a Fat Fifty in warm saltwater, while running on plane. She was under water for 60 hrs, until I found her. I hosed her down and pulled the carb, distributor and starter, baking the latter two in the oven for 45 minutes on 250*F. I squirted some heavy gas/oil mix into the...

One Stringer or Engine Block is slightly compromised Question

Gee, at least sister up a piece of 2X lumber, with some bolts, if you have the clearance.

    brass propeller Johnson?

When did spline drive appear on Johnnyrudes? Mid 70's? Earlier motors were pin drive, I would think. Are you sure that is not an inboard sailboat prop?

Hydraulic steering is real smooth. If it springs a leak, it can get dangerous.

What size Fuel Water Separator? 1998 Mercury Force 120 HP.

Any of the screw on oil filter like water separators will work. You want at least a 5/16" fuel line fitting, but 3/8" is best. The Racor's with the clear bowl are nice, but are more expensive, have two gaskets that can leak, and will deteriorate is left in the sun. I use the cheaper metal...

Any saving the engine? I’m devastated

You are lucky it is fresh water. Drain the carbs, Oil the cylinders, hook up some fresh fuel and run her for 45 minutes to dry it out. Saltwater would require a tear down.

    Torque values

There is certainly a torque sequence and value. It sounds like you need an accurate service manual. See if marineengine has one for you. Why are you replacing the reeds?

    1965 Johnson 6hp spark plugs

They are a bit too hot for that motor. Since the motor is water cooled, it will probably (probably) be fine, but you should inspect the spark plugs for a greenish tint. If you see it, the motor is likely overheating, at least in the combustion chamber. For $5 you can put the factory...

    Motor turning to the left

It is normal for motors with right hand props to pull to the right. There should be a small fin above and behind the prop that is adjustable. Turn it CCW to lessen or remove the pull to the right.

One Stringer or Engine Block is slightly compromised Question

Gee, you have the engine out now. This is the time to make all repairs, or you will be too lazy over the winter to pull the engine again, no?

1977 merc 150 outboard bogs at WOT

I would think a 17 or 18P prop wpuld work, if the boat weighs what a 17 footer should. I ran that motor on my 16' speedboat with a 21P prop and could get 60+MPH. The hull is pretty flat bottomed.

    No feedback helm question

That sounds like a lot of play. I presume you are discussing a cable NFB system. See where the play originates. It could be the motor mounts or some parts of the steering system.
