Sychonizing the Carbs on '96 Mariner 90hp OB

Synchronizing of carbs is mechanical on Mercs. Not sure about Yammies. There will be set screws on the carb linkages. You loosen them all, set the throttle closed, and tighten the set screws so the carb throttle plates all open at the same instant.

    Mercruiser - Stalls in Reverse

The shift assist switch kills the ignition whenever shifting is hard, to unload the gears and make shifting easier. A binding shift cable simulates loaded gears. It makes no difference if the outdrive is up or down. Put the flusher on and see if she still stalls. If so, the cable is the culprit.

    Mercruiser overheating

Gee, test the thermostat in a pan of water on the stove. Use a candy thermometer to see that it opens at the correct temp.

98 Mercury 90 hp Throttle cable/throttle lever problem

Add some preload to your throttle cable, to positively push the throttle closed. That should help shifting as well.

When you say test ports, do you mean for vacuum gauges?

    Mercruiser overheating

You can use a flusher device at idle speed to test. A barrel of water is a bit better. Check the hoses out of the thermostat for hot water. If the hoses get hot, the thermostat is open and the water is being circulated.

    Mercruiser - Stalls in Reverse

Corrosion often gets to the part of the shift cable that needs to move to engage reverse, making it stiff. This stiffness caused the shift interrupt switch to kill the ign.

    Mercruiser overheating

So your new thermostat is stuck, or is it just still closed 'cause the motor is cold? Clogged exhaust manifolds and risers can cause overheat. Were those ever replaced? Also, a head gasket leak can cause the same.

    Trim Pump Motor

There are two different types of motors. The two wire motor works exactly as you described, with the PTT relays serving to reverse the polarity of the voltage on the PTT motor. Power is applied to one of the PTT motor wires via the relay. The other wire on the PTT motor is grounded, when the...

Mercury Spanner wrench for tilt and trim

Amazon has lots of spanners for all prices. Maybe you can find one for less. I would hope you do not need a breaker bar to remove the cap.

    Trim pump wiring acting opposite

Gee, just switch the wires and call it a boat.

    Trim pump wiring acting opposite

No, the motor would need to be disassembled, and the center section turned around. A lot of those center sections can be installed either way. I suppose the factory could screw it up, but that kind of quality breakdown would be unusual.

    Trim pump wiring acting opposite

If the PTT motor uses a permanent magnet for the field, and someone turned it upside down, the motor may act like yours is acting. Any possibility of that?

    Winterization

OK, so you don't use the flusher to add the A-F. Good for you, as that doesn't work very well.

Good morning everyone. I have a 1973 Mercury 850.im having trouble with keeping it locked while in use.

Maybe the plastic cam is stripped? Maybe you can wire it to stay hooked all the time, as it sounds like that would work for you.

    Winterization

Running antifreeze info engine via a flusher device is a fool's errand. it has very little chance of working, and very often leaves water in the block. It is better to pull the plugs, probe the drain holes to dig out the rust and debris. After the water drains out, add some antifreeze to...

Good morning everyone. I have a 1973 Mercury 850.im having trouble with keeping it locked while in use.

The motor should be locked down in neutral and reverse, and not locked in forward only. There is an adjustment on the rod to position the hook. Also the locking rod rides on the plastic cam on the shift shaft. Is it worn out?

    Unknown toggle switch

Often boats have switches for optional items never installed. I wired my GPS and radio to the wiper switch, since I do not have wipers, nor a GPS/radio switch.

    2 stroke winterizing?

Fogging keeps rust out of the bearings in the crankcase. The modern motors are pretty adverse to rust, so I expect it to be a good idea to fog 'em. I never fogged my '58 Johnny, since fogging hadn't been invented. Heck that motor fell into the salt water while running at high speed, and no...
